The original story was pieced together, due to the lead writer leaving and taking his unwanted story with him, a year before release. The detailed explanations of both the Darkness, and the Stranger, most likely went with the writer, when he left.
People need to let this go, imo. Biggest black Mark/criticism against D1, was a discombobulated story. So in D2, they put the Darkness story on a shelf for a later game / expansion. This allows them to write and provide us, with a story with defined antagonist, protagonist, and a centralized theme. Allowing for narrative accompanied by cut scenes.
At least wait until D2 launches, until B'tching about story/lore.

Exactly. Two of the biggest community d1 whines: 1. The story sucked 2. Bungie doesn't listen to the community. Well, clearly they did hear it so they scrapped the crappy story. Then what? "How dare Bungie get rid of the story we whined about incessantly?!"
