Rare? If I remember correctly all you have to do is defeat the Pale Shade of Londor when (s)he invades you.

You need both invasions and the farrion seems to have heysel scripted first. Same with creighton. I have manikin claws so i wonder if i needed to collect two times at the same spot to get it.... i did the same thing with catarina set. Never realized until recently there was a pick up at yhorms for his armor.(i just went for the greatshield)
