To start out, I recommend picking a basic class based on your preferences. If you like bashing heads in, barbarian. Magic? Traditional Mage/ wizard. Sneaky? Rogue. Tracking/long range? Hunter/ archer.
Choose human as your race if you want to be a bit more flexible, or, if you have a group or you know what you want to specialize in, choose half orcs/ orcs and halflings (if you know what you are doing) work best as melee. Hunters and archers work best as elves or half elves, but gnomes work well as hunters and overall adventuring. Rogues and thieves should be gnomes, halflings, or goblins. Goblins are best here due to innate abilities. Wizards are best when either gnomes or elves. Bards can really be any race depending on what you strive for as a bard.
Note that any race can be anything, and can create hybrid classes. Humans can fill in anywhere.
Never forget to do perception checks, and try to be careful with unknown environments and artifacts. Try to have a bard that has a broad level of knowledge, as well as a wizard that has spell raft abilities.
This info may be wrong since it is mostly anecdotal.
