Importance of Music in Games

I have three questions. You may answer only the ones you care to answer, or all of them. Firstly, how important is music in videogames to you? Does it not matter, is it a nice icing on the cake, is it a pretty big deal but ultimately unnecessary, or does it make or break a game for you? Secondly, let's say you hear a song that blows you away and you absolutely love it, whether it's exciting, dramatic, chilling, emotional or beautiful. However, you've either never seen gameplay from the game it's from, or you have and weren't interested in it. Does that amazing music you heard make you want to love the game, or want to try it? And lastly, what are some games with incredible music? Are those games some of your favorite, or do you simply enjoy the music? Do you feel the music changed your view on those games? Maybe share a specific song?

  • To me, a video game without music is a peanut-butter & jelly sandwich without bread. Most of my favorite songs are video game soundtracks. I'm not often in that kind of situation, but if I am I try to track it down. My favorite soundtracks include Halo (especially Halo 2), Destiny, Gears of War, Oblivion, Super Smash Bros, and Undertale. I also really enjoy soundtracks from my childhood games like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and Resident Evil, though my favorite has to be Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Time/Darkness/Sky. When I hear the track "Don't Ever Forget..." start to play, tears well up in my eyes (anyone who has played the game will understand).
