To all those people complaining that the story should have been in the game, I don't agree with you 100%. When I'm in front of destiny I want to be playing a game. I don't want to spend the relatively limited amount of game time I have available reading things that could be easily read on my phone anywhere else. I get that people are annoyed but even for games like mass effect (which I thoroughly enjoyed) I just did not have time to sit there and read through that codex. I actually feel that the grimoire (And the app and the open API) is one of the best things destiny has going for it and I find it strange that people are so upset by it.

 • Good for you, I'd rather be playing a game with a coherent story. That's why I plan on playing the Halo 2 and 3 from start to finish until Rise of Iron is out

 • Heheh can't fault you there. Halo's story was engrossing. Then the graphic novel and the movies were fun, too. But Halo 2 and 3 redefined the genre. I've got some good memories.

 • Mass Effect told the story through the missions and fully explained and devolved the current storyline through gameplay and conversations with the characters. The Codex was for background information on the different alien races. Their history, biology, government, etc... As well as your version of Commander Shepard's story. Also including the entire system of pseudoscience that they created to explain how things like the Mass Relays and Element Zero cores worked. This is not the case with Destiny. The story missions don't link and flow together like a story is supposed to. You just go from one random thing straight to another. Nor is the storyline of what's currently happening ever said in the missions or cutscenes. Example, "I could tell you of the great battle fought centuries ago." This line is said by the Speaker and he just leaves it at that and moves on. Ok great, so you want me to go fight but what am I fighting, who am I fighting, and why do I care? Tell me about this great battle! Another example is the line, "I don't even have time to explain why I don't have time to explain." Really? This random character shows up, hops in our radio frequency, and tells us to go to Venus. We get there and find her, and she tells us nothing. Absolutely nothing to progress the story or to even start one. The grimoire tells us the story as well as background information, the lore, and the history of the different races. However we shouldn't have to leave the game to learn the story. It should be in the, you know, story missions and cutscenes. Hence the name, story missions. Everything else being in the grimoire is perfectly acceptable though.

 • All valid points.
However, you "could" say the Speaker manipulating you into feeling that way is actually part of the story! That's pretty much why Osiris is out of the picture at the tower. ;-)
• A fair point about the Speaker. I just wish that he had more of a role. I want to know about this great battle fought long ago.

 • You wouldn't need to read if they put the story in the game, don't be ridiculous.

 • How do you propose they put the extended story in the game other than a grimoire kiosk? Ideally, we would have cut scenes and audio telling the story while we ride around on our sparrow and during down time while still in game. That takes money and time. If the stories are true, there was less of both of those after the rebooted the story. I, however, have no desire to read stuff like the Books of Sorrow in game. Nor am I interested in a watered down version being dumped in there as audio just to get it done. And I don't want to feel guilty for not spending my couch time reading tons of (awesome) lore text. That's what the toilet is for, right? Including so much lore in the blue rare gear descriptions, though... That was a tricky maneuver.

 • They don't need the lore to be in the game, they need to put a story in the game. There needs to be an enemy that is properly built up and established, who has their own ideas. There must be some real objective that is believable and difficult to pass. Their must also be several parts to the story, and an actual story arc that build up suspense to a proper climax. Sure TTK did this, sort of, but it really was just an average story that didn't make as much sense as it should have it you haven't read the grimoir cards online. Also, just because you would' use a grimoir kiosk doesn't mean other people won't. There is no harm in putting it in the game, now is there?

There's no reason the lore can't be in the game and the app.
