I don't know much of anything about the lore in destiny, but I am interested.
Specifically I'd like to know what's actually going on during the raid. I know what to do but the game does a poor job of explaining why we're doing it.
• How did the Vault of Glass get there and what is its purpose?
• What is the spire at the beginning?
• Why are the Vex sacrificing themselves to the confluxes? What is that achieving?
• What exactly is the ritual of negation?
• What are the oracles? What's their job? How and why to they mark you for negation?
• Who is the Templar and what's his role?
• How was the relic created and what does it actually do?
• Who are the Gorgons and what happens to you that causes death when they see you?
• What's with that center conflux in the throne room at the gatekeeper? Why do you have to start defending it?
• Why are there precursors when you get to the throne room? And who are they?
• Why are there 2 separate relics in the gatekeeper section?
• Where and why does Atheon teleport you? I know it's past and future, but how do we know? And where exactly is it? Are they past and future versions of the throne room?
• Why do oracles spawn in these other dimensions?
• What is "Time's Vengeance". Why does it give you a buff and what causes your team to get the buff?
• Why do you go blind in the other dimensions?
• What are the supplicants?
• Who is Aethon and what exactly is his role in the Vex?
I know this is a lot lol but I'm very curious and I know none of these things. Let's discuss it.
Edit: Thanks so much for all the replies! You guys are awesome and I've already learned quite a bit!

The Gorgons are Taken Harpies from the Vex's first war with Oryx
-
84 RepliesSo before anything else is said, you need a basic understating of the Vex goal. The Vex are searching for what they call "an emperor to all outcomes." This means they want to have something in place so that no matter what happens they have some kind of response that ultimately leads to a Vex victory. The Black Garden and the Vault of Glass are two such projects built to fulfill two separate victory conditions. Atheon was the Vex Axis Mind in charge of the Vault. The Vault is most likely the culmination of Vex efforts to understand and replicate a Hive Throne World based on what Quria, Blade Transform learned during his war with Oryx before being defeated. The Vex want to use the vault to establish themselves as a fundamental rule of existence. The Templar's Ritual of Negation and Oracles work because the Vex have established a level of control over the very nature of reality within the Vault. The Oracles are able to tag enemies and then the Templar uses the ritual to delete what the Oracles tag from existence. Put another way, the Oracles decide how the Vex want to change and shape reality and the Templar makes that reality so. The Gorgons are a similar but slightly different. Gorgons can both tag and delete, but they must physically see what they want to change while the Oracle-Templar combo do not. The Relic/Aegis was created by Kabr, the Titan who led the original failed raid of the vault. He built it by merging his dying light and what remained of his ghost with the body of a Gorgon he destroyed. This allows future Guardians to channel and use light to shape reality within the Vault with their light and the Vex can't destroy it because its made of a Gorgon. This is why the Relic can destroy the Templar's shield for example. The final area is the Glass Throne and is the seat of Atheon, Time's Conflux. All time bends around itself and meets in this place. Precursor, Descendent, and modern Vex all exist because the future, past, and present all exist here. The timegates in the room don't lead to "Mars" and "Venus" as most call it, but to past and future versions of the Vault. Two relics exist here for a short while because you pull one from a past version of the Vault and one from a future version of the Vault. Atheon teleports you to separate you so that you can be killed individually and because, as the blinding effects shows, guardians don't seem to do very well when pulled out of our time of origin. We are saved again by the Aegis because Kabr made it so it is a fundamental rule within the Vault. It exists in the past and future and we use it to pull ourselves back into the present. When we do so after being teleported it activates the "Time's Vengeance" effect. This cause all timelines to temporarily and partially merge. Your weapon does so much extra damage because for a brief time it isn't just your 6 man fireteam doing damage, but every guardian that ever has and ever will reach Atheon from every timeline coming together. I know I didn't hit all of your questions, but I hope this helps!

11 Replies-cracks knuckles- Let's do this • How did the Vault of Glass get there and what is its purpose? It is a time loop on venus after the Tera forming by the traveller. It exists for the sole reason of creating atheon who loops back to form the vault which exists to form himself. There actually is science behind it... mind melting wtf am I smoking science... but science • What is the spire at the beginning? The spire is a key. The light acts enteracts to build the key. When the Vex take over a pad they halt the interaction causing the key to stop building. • Why are the Vex sacrificing themselves to the confluxes? What is that achieving? Law of equal exchange. For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction. By sacrificing to the confluxes they are charging them to kill us. It doesn't work when they are killed because they have to willingly do it themselves. • What exactly is the ritual of negation? The Vex exist outside of the confines of time and reality, being able to cross time streams for example. The ritual of negation is them simple deciding that you no longer exist in THIS time stream and banishing ypu to another. • What are the oracles? What's their job? How and why to they mark you for negation? Oracles are the ones that control the essence of the time stream hopping. They don't exist in anyone time stream but can be forced out of one by physical trauma. As for how and why see above. • Who is the Templar and what's his role? Think of a security gaurd cause that's about it. • How was the relic created and what does it actually do? The relic was forged from Kabrs light as he was absorbed into the Vex which causes disruptions to their perception to the control of the fabric of reality. Basicly it is a pocket of stasis time and light that overrules the will of the Vex collective. • Who are the Gorgons and what happens to you that causes death when they see you? Basicly more vessels for the power of negation. However these are tied to this specific time steam. Some would argue this means they would never die, however this would actually create a butterfly effect that the current time stream would have to realize and correct. • What's with that center conflux in the throne room at the gatekeeper? Why do you have to start defending it? Again, just another key. Except this one is rigged with security. Bypass the. Gaurds that try to activate the security and your in. • Why are there precursors when you get to the throne room? And who are they? Precursors are actually the future vex. But because of the time loop they exist right now because the descendents which are the previous vex don't yet exist. YAY MIND MELTING TIME LOOPS!!! • Why are there 2 separate relics in the gatekeeper section? When making the relic he forged it in all of the existence of the vault. Past and future are there because the present was used by those who escaped to we'll escape. • Where and why does Atheon teleport you? I know it's past and future, but how do we know? And where exactly is it? Are they past and future versions of the throne room? It is the past and present of the throne room. He teleports yoy there because in this time stream the oracles reside in both past and present but not the current.and you can tell by the design of the rooms. • Why do oracles spawn in these other dimensions? Not a different dimension, just another period of time. Hence why they spawn at the same pace in the same spot every time. • What is "Time's Vengeance". Why does it give you a buff and what causes your team to get the buff? Remnant of Kabrs light that is awakened when you damage the Vex collective time stream. • Why do you go blind in the other dimensions? Because yoy do not exist at those times. Think of back to the future. He will cease to exist if he does not fx the fault in time because he does not exist. But when he goes to the future he doesn't because he still is alive. Same concept. • What are the supplicants? Atheon strapped proximity explosives to his personal gaurds. I can't explain that any other way. • Who is Aethon and what exactly is his role in the Vex? Aethon is the constructor of the vault which exists to build him which exists to build the vault which exists.... TIME LOOP!!!!

5 RepliesVoG is kinda like the first half of a medium sized budget movie. First half you can tell they had all the time and money in the world to create something special. Then as the hour turns you can tell they ran out of funding (Crotas End and HoW, ttk) Vog is by far my favorite thing about Destiny. The map is Huge. Packed with all kinds of secret areas and mazes and well, stuff to explore. And i'm still not convinced they are done with the VoG Raid and story and stuff. Off the record I think the Stranger and the Vault will be back in Destiny 2. I'm not knocking the newer Raids, but aint nothing they've released since launch been as extensive as VoG. Man the nights that turned into mornings just jumping around exploring the Vault. good times.

10 RepliesI don't know much of anything about the lore in destiny, but I am interested. Specifically I'd like to know what's actually going on during the raid. I know what to do but the game does a poor job of explaining why we're doing it. • How did the Vault of Glass get there and what is its purpose? In my opinion it's a temporal causality loop, Atheon created the Vault so the Vault could create him so he could create the Vault so... that repeats infinitely • What is the spire at the beginning? That's simply how you open the Vault • Why are the Vex sacrificing themselves to the confluxes? What is that achieving? In my opinion this is a Vex practice of Sword Logic, granting them their ontological powers • What exactly is the ritual of negation? The ritual of erasing you from reality • What are the oracles? What's their job? How and why to they mark you for negation They see the future the Vex wish to have then tell the Templar what to remove (us) by the Ritual of Negation • Who is the Templar and what's his role? Just answered • How was the relic created and what does it actually do? Kabr crafted the relic with his Light, possibly Ghost, and possible (likely) a Gorgon. This being Vex of the Vault it can protect you from being negated. Almost as if it cloaks you. • Who are the Gorgons and what happens to you that causes death when they see you? Essentially the same thing as the Templar • What's with that center conflux in the throne room at the gatekeeper? Why do you have to start defending it? This also is explained as Vex Sword Logic, stopping them from sacrificing is keeping them weaker. • Why are there precursors when you get to the throne room? And who are they? They're realllllly old Vex, and they guard it... pretty much it. • Why are there 2 separate relics in the gatekeeper section? Time is folded in on itself here. There's actually only one in two separate instances, just physically in the same space. • Where and why does Atheon teleport you? I know it's past and future, but how do we know? And where exactly is it? Are they past and future versions of the throne room? To stop you. And yes past and future, these are like i said other points of the folded timelines. • Why do oracles spawn in these other dimensions? To negate you. • What is "Time's Vengeance". Why does it give you a buff and what causes your team to get the buff? The popular theory is that this is multiple instances of yourself attacking Atheon all at once. • Why do you go blind in the other dimensions? You're being negated from existence. • What are the supplicants? Uh...well they're pretty much just Vex who want to stop you. • Who is Aethon and what exactly is his role in the Vex? He is Time's Conflux, his role is to be the center point, the linchpin between all timeliness, because of this there is only one of him.

There was once a great story surrounded in incredible lore... Then it was scrapped.... Now, they are just kinda shoehorning in shit.

6 RepliesEdited by Saxifraga: 4/23/2016 9:30:06 PMIt all made sense in the Joe Staten version of the story, but since the darkness/deep took control, the timeline was broken and reassembled into a bloody mess. Only fragments are known and have been distributed all over time and space. We need The Doctor to glue it together again.

1 ReplyI hate that the vex are now a race that wants to emulate the hive. They were much more frightening as time machines who's purpose was unknown and they were achieving it by becoming a part of reality. Definitely the most interesting villain race in Destiny.

Edited by LynxD3stiny: 4/24/2016 5:11:27 PMI know a couple. I know that the ritual of negation is a weapon used by the oracles in song form (similar to deathsingers). They use the song to write you out of existence. Make you lost to time so that you never existed. Aegis is the shield formed by kabr to keep you stable within the vault. Otherwise you'd be lost to time. Like kabr or praydeth. Times vengeance is a moment in which every guardian who has every fought and will fight atheon does so. Within the vault time is fluid. Every moment in time is happening within the vault. So when times vengeance is up, all points in time cross paths. Times vengeance is a jab at the reason we can defeat enemies like the vex or oryx. As guardians we wield the light and oryx wields the dark. Both sides however make him and us paracausal. This means we are not bound to reality, rather we shape it. This is guardians choosing their fate and combining the time lines. Atheon is the vex that controls time and it's movement within the vault. He is also it's protector. The rooms are the throne room yes. Just in different points in time. It just looks different because you are heading down from where atheon emerges, rather than the entrance. The precursors are there because time is fluid. Thats all I know about that. The oracles don't necessarily mark you, rather you hear the song and you start being ripped from existence. The Templar just finishes the job by casting those who have heard the note.

Reading the grimoires in Year1, it says about Kabr, "No one can open the vault alone. I opened the vault. There was no one with me, but I was not alone." When I read this I had it in my head that when Kabr went to finally open the vault he was greeted with multiple versions of himself, all from the various other times he's visited the vault. It turns out it's just because his fireteam (most of it) had been erased from existence. The Vault has a lot of lore behind it, but a lot of the fun back then was the community trying to fill in the blanks together.

You see, when two Vex love each other very much...

3 Replies• How did the Vault of Glass get there and what is its purpose? During the pre-golden age era, a great entity located in the northern hemisphere places it there as one of their crowning achievements. Its sole purpose, to deliver bugs and cheeses to all the land. • What is the spire at the beginning? It is a monument to this entity's most prized warrior. This warrior, when excited, would speak to the peasants and ensure that they new just how delicious water fowl truly are. This is symbolic of his excitement. • Why are the Vex sacrificing themselves to the confluxes? What is that achieving? The only way to rid themselves of their addiction to the variable ratio schedule is to commit suicide. They are achieving freedom. • What exactly is the ritual of negation? A wise leader, known in that timeline as The Great Weizkewski, needed something to fill his time. Thus he created fierce weapons and gave them to the people. Only to strip them of all their worth the moment those people learned to use them effectively. The great "negation." • What are the oracles? What's their job? How and why to they mark you for negation? They ensure tasty beverages for the entire team. • Who is the Templar and what's his role? Ah, this giant is a replica of the daring and deceitful Smith, who is still known to this day for his great prowess in ridding the land of their trust in The Developers. The people disliked his ways so much that time and again they would form 6 man teams and cruelty push him off of the ledge of his temple. The entity took notice and forbade. • How was the relic created and what does it actually do? This device is used by the entity's well known champion of public influence as a salt block. To block salt. That is all. • Who are the Gorgons and what happens to you that causes death when they see you? More of these The Developers later. • What's with that center conflux in the throne room at the gatekeeper? Why do you have to start defending it? Soon after the Vault was created, The Developers realized their errors and began sacrificing themselves to time itself. The people were so bound to their addiction that they could not let this happen. • Why are there precursors when you get to the throne room? And who are they? These are the cloned minions of the entity's scribe...The Cozmo. They are noticed, short lived, and not very memorable. • Why are there 2 separate relics in the gatekeeper section? We talked about the salt blocks, however in that time a force stronger than the darkness itself was ever present in the Vault. This was the great hall, of Aren-G. And rest assured that when Aren-G failed to bestow his love on the people...there was salt. • Where and why does Atheon teleport you? I know it's past and future, but how do we know? And where exactly is it? Are they past and future versions of the throne room? After fighting in the Vault and beyond for some time, the people soon took up the notion that between Aren-G, The Templar, the platforms,
the crucible
, The Developers had no idea which direction they wanted to go. Thus so it is that when inside the Vaul, in the heat of battle, you have no idea where you are going. • Why do oracles spawn in these other dimensions? BECAUSE THE GREAT SMITH WANTS A COFFEE! • What is "Time's Vengeance". Why does it give you a buff and what causes your team to get the buff? Over time, and this lives on to this day, the people shall grow weary of The Developers and gain a "buff" to ensure that the hold over them is lifted and this they shall make their own fate. • Why do you go blind in the other dimensions? There is an ancient proverb. Some say it is older than The Developers. Older than time itself. Put in place to assist the people and their offspring. This same way of thinking was put in place in the Vault as a warning. "If you play with it too much, you'll go blind • What are the supplicants? Submissive s3x slaves, sent by the almighty "Deej" to appease the masses in their moment of distrust. Unfortunately, not unlike many other attempts at populace control, this one was a failed time line and backfired. • Who is Aethon and what exactly is his role in the Vex? Just as the Vault exists in past, present and future, so The Developers are able to predict the future. This is a massive monument to the entity's most feared ruler. No, not the tactful Harold Ryan. This is a far more ruthless and terrible leader. The highest paid and the absolute shiniest God known to us all. In the execution stages this beast was slated as Aetheon. But in its true form. It is known. As none other.
than Activision
2 RepliesThe vault of glass is a place where vex can go and have sexual relations with the same or opposite sex. Many sex toys and adult video rooms are located in the dark halls. Also, many parties and school dances are held within the gates of the so called glassy vault. The great lord John Stamos once made an appearance at the vault and ever since then my balls have been rock hard. Raid on guardians, raid on.

I don't wanna be a condescending dick, but there is a thing called grimoire in the app and the web page. Read it if you haven't, then read it again. Also, if you're into lore I suggest Sir Wallen on youtube. He did a great series last year on all Destiny lore subjects that were available until HoW. I myself listened to his stuff for 2 months before even owning a console or Destiny.
Downloaded it into mp3, put it on my phone and listened to it over and over.
Sadly, he no longer plays Destiny and is still trying to jog some life into that complete disaster called Division.
