Is it wrong to use the word retarded as an insult?
I was in my advisory and me and a couple friends were joking around and I called one retarded (as a joke, and the friend knew that) and my advisor yelled at me and told me to not use that word in her room every again
Seems like people take things to seriously

Words ,for the most part, only have as much power as the receiver allows them to have. In the case of retarded it's a little different as those with a mental handicap more than likely understand what's being said but due to the developmental impairment they lack the ability to compartmentalize the insult and will suffer much greater than you or I. I'm not one for censorship but I would hope people could be a little more judicious is their use of the word. An anti-PC'ers opinion. With that being said, he doesn't even know what the word means at all and neither do most mentally disabled people. Theres a term that exists. I completely forgot it but i got called one once. Basically it means that every day words are offensive. For example, you cant say "walk" because youll offend a wheelchair bound person. Cant say "stupid" because youll offend an autistic person and etc etc. Its the stupidest term to exist next to cultural appropriation and it just shows how asshurt people get over the smallest things.

Most people don't use the word retard to describe other people, even as a joke. It's a degrading word, and could be sensitive to other people. Your better off just not saying it to avoid offending anyone.

Don't be retarded of course it is, would it be wrong to use the word stupid because it offends stupid people or call someone fat if they're actually fat or call a hammer a hammer when it is a hammer. We have words for a reason retarded is used as an insult because it implies someone or something is so stupid they are mentally impaired i.e actually retarded.

1 ReplyIt's an insult, it's meant to be insulting. That said you wouldn't call someone a retard if there is an actual retarded person there, you would offend the wrong person. It's like I am not racist, but if I'm fighting with a person of another race I may use racial insults to offend, I wouldn't do that if there was other people there because I'm directing it at that individual, not a race or type of person.
