Why do so many many men/boys have so many female guardians? It's not a problem. It's not wrong. Just wondering.
I logged onto Twitch the other day and watched Todd's stream. (I'm calling them Todd to protect their identity) They were doing a Vault of Glass challenge using only No Land Beyond. From close speculation, I saw EVERY guardian there was a female weather it was Awoken/Exo, or Human, (Awoken being the most popular dominating the whole fireteam). I commented, "Why do guys have so many female characters?" He replied on-stream by saying, "evanzilla, (I'm keeping my Twitch name hidden.) that's sexist and offensive." I automatically felt bad and was convinced I did something wrong so I pleaded in the comments for mercy on the streamer's behalf. Everyone in the chat said things like, "gr8 b8 m8", and "not buying it you fag.", until I was left with no choice but to convince of my truth and subbed for the streamer.
So what's in a gender anyway?
I've noticed that asking why a male player is using a female character tends to spread a lot of fire, and ultimately gets me booted from a team, or blocked/muted.
I could simply go the offensive route by saying, "Guys who have female characters want to use girls as objects in their fantasies" Or I could go the psychological route by saying, "Boys and men with female characters are having an emotional loss and are distancing themselves from real women and seeking refuge online..." BORING.
Not too long ago there were, "leaked" artistic representations of the Queen and Petra Venj "nude" and EVERYONE WENT BERSERK! It was like throwing a prime rib steak at a group of starved dogs. They were ravenous! Bungie quickly got ahold of the thread, and thank heck deleted those images.
Notice how both the Queen and Petra Venj are both AWOKEN.
Here's another generalization I could propose. "Guys in Destiny make female Awoken chicks as there players to satisfy their **xual fetishes." Now that's just plain creepy.
EDIT: Another idea says that everyone seems to like the shaders and armor on the female guardians.
The last generalization is that people just like female characters. Plain. I'm guessing one of these has to fit with most everyone who plays a female character as a male in real life.
If there's anything else I missed please tell me in the comments so I can edit the post.
CONCLUSION: So there isn't one dominant reason why. Some like the shaders, some like the armor, some like the booty, and some just roll with it. This wasn't one of those, "Guys with girl guardians are total sex whores who need to be banned" posts. It was PURELY OUT OF CURIOSITY. Thanks guys for your answers.
Edit 1: Wow guys! 50 replies in an hour, that's awesome!! Also, there seems to be a pattern of people saying the arm our looks better, and I kinda agree.
Edit 2: Holy jeez we got 200 comments! Thanks guys! Speechless. Also, people are STRONGLY saying the armor and shaders look good. Will add that in.
Edit 3: if you guys think I'm not about women you're totally wrong. Yes women are awesome, but they're not objects.
Also, an women out there with an opinion on this?
Edit 4: LOADS of people are saying they'd rather look at a girl's "*ss" rather than a guy's. I personally wouldn't look and anyone's ass and just play the game it was meant for.
Edit 5: No words. There seems to be a lot of chatter about this topic. Thanks for all your reasons why the women characters are used a lot! It helps me understand something that no one talks about.
Edit 6: Guys, I just wanna know WHY, I'm just curious as to why there is such a high pattern.
EDIT 7: This was all a survey conducted for information contributing to the thesis of my cultural dissertation. No judgements were meant to be made.

Ok, I have to get ready for work in thirty minutes so I'm going to try and rush through this response, but I did want to get it up for you. For history of narritive... My original post
Was too long to be posted with this post. Can be found further back in the thread.
My second post ...
Do me a favor. Reply to this post stating specifically the topic, and intended angle of your paper. I meant every word of my post below, but had I known your intent that post would have been very different. That said, I still don't fully know your objective/angle here. Tell me what it is you're really looking for, and I will give you a post that addresses what you are asking as best I can. Also, when is this due by? My next post will take me at least a day of research and note taking. I intend to do it over the next two days. Why? Because this sort of conversation is actually fun for me.
Cancur's reply to second post...
So it's a cultural dissertation, so my prof. Isn't taking it as our final, he just wants us to examine our surrounding culture and write a "mini" thesis on one of the problems, or improvements of it. I chose sexism, and dominance. It's due by the end of Christmas break, (January 4th for us), so I don't have much of a rush. I'm using this survey to segway into a discussion on early onset dominance and how society teaches that women should be, "submissive" people and let men hold the power, and also teach women how to become more powerful and independent.
OP here is referring to an ideal known as toxic masculinity. An idea that states that the traits men exhibit naturally are somehow harmful to men themselves, and should be avoided. Also, that because of the innate toxic nature of men we therefore create female characters in an act of dominance over this female avatar. Originally I was going to put together a narrative to counter this by writing my own counter thesis to his thesis in which I would paraphrase the following people, and link them as sources. I have decided however to let my sources speak for themselves. Also, since I'm a straight white male I get the felling OP is much less likely to listen to me than he would be to listen to my sources. So here goes. First to your idea that men want to dominate women in video games. This touches very closely to the whole gamergate issue. So here is a history of gamergate for those who don't know. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7ubG5nG2Gc part 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1T2-sPc57-8 part 2 Those videos chronicle the timeline of gamergate up to the backlash of #not your shield https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYqBdCmDR0M Back to the points at hand from the OP, the narrative he is trying to form is straight from the 3rd wave play book. It's an attack on males themselves, and has been argued against time and time again. I will let my sources speak for themselves however. Karen Straughan A female MRA (mens rights activist) speaking on Toxic Masculinity, and Toxic Femininity https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0zQf5NMG8E Christina Hoff Sommers A second wave feminist who speaks out against the dangers, and harmfulness of the third wave feminist narrative. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_hS-JXoTMk Christina Sommers is also often quoted by. Milo Yiannopoulos A gay MRA who is gaining ground quickly, and becoming a much needed very loud voice. I list him especially since i remember seeing OP say he was gay so perhaps here is a source he can more easily identify with. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiESisEL43c The topic of your thesis is ... Misguided. This is me going out of my way to be as nice as possible. For other references I give you. Erin Pizzey She opened the first womens shelter in the UK. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dj8883DryKA ChristyOMisty A no longer existent youtube channel taken down because of backlash from 3rd wave feminist. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IT9jeK30yH8 Christy references Stalin's love for feminists, calling them his "Useful Idiots". She wasn't just taking out her back side. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiWdIrY_5FE There is a movie coming out soon on this subject that I'm actually eager to see. It's called "The Red Pill" by Cassie Jaye. You can find the website for the movie here. http://www.theredpillmovie.com/index.html Trailer for movie here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HK7n_XA40V8 Interview with Cassie Jaye here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lDy14Lq2kM Now when I say that I view 3rd wave feminism as the thing destroying western society I mean that. Japan is ahead of the west on the bell curve of where this all leads. They have a phenomenon known as the herbivore man. Japanese men opting out of traditional societal roles because they refuse to play the game any more. They are the end result of the MGTOW movement in the west. So prevalent that Japan has started closing schools because they no longer have the kids to fill them. Their population is expected to drop by 1/3 by 2060. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0TDXkmCub0 It has already progressed to the point that men are falling behind in the west. In the US for every 140 women that earn a degree now, only 100 men will. All while 3rd wave feminists push for quotas of how many women should be in different "positions of power." Your thesis is wrong. It is just flat out wrong in every way. Remember that part at the end of my first post that you said you liked? The part about me realizing how much of an idiot I had been, and learning to think for myself, and more importantly to think skeptically for the first time? You need to reach that point. Skepticism is a beautiful thing. It is the difference that separates you from being someone who knows what you think because you've seen the evidence from ALL sides of a story, and applied Occam's Razor accordingly, or being one of Stalin's "Useful Idiots". My childhood movie franchise was the Alien films. Sigourney Weaver is my hero. So the answer to why I have a female avatar is... Aliens
-
I wonder how many white players play as black toons and vice versa? That is a much more interesting question.

1 ReplyThere's a very simple explanation, female characters take up less space and therefore are harder to hit in most online shooters. Look at the size of a female titan compared to male their smaller than the hunters!
-
A far better question would be, "Why do you care?"
-
Different dances
-
I made my Titan female because I wanted a pure, badass woman in my team. Some of my favourite movies have female leads i.e. The Fifth Element, Resident Evil, Silent Hill. If we ever get more character slots, I'll be making a female Warlock too. The armour looks much better on their model than the males.
-
At first I liked the female face models and wasn't a fan of any of the male faces (don't understand the exo love, personally.) Then I liked the female awoken bow better than all of the other available emotes.
-
I have one only because I wanted something different after having males for a year.
-
It's just gender confusion.
-
I'm a guy, and I like girls. Simple
-
Because before I was playing this game a lot of the lead characters were female. Resident evil 5, Final Fantasy 13, Tomb Raider. Just made sense
-
I feel they are harder to hit and faster and they make me feel non hesitant when it comes to sniping I don't like being big and bulky
-
1 ReplyI have a female Exo because the dance is awesome, that's it.
-
I made a female hunter because imo the armor looks better on females. I almost want to delete my male warlock and make a female for the same reason. For the most part armor looks horrible on male warlocks.
-
I think of it (from my Skyrim experience) that it's for the back/story; like role-playing.
-
I am a heterosexual male who plays both genders. I like the idea of a strong female guardian whooping ass all across the universe.
-
Never realized the difference between the warlock, male hunters look fat in the chest armor, and with female Titans they have noodle arms. Once I get the exotic DO cloak I'm remaking my male hunter into a female
-
I simply choose the gender I am. Some others think it's weird that guys have female characters, like my sister. She asked why and when I answered with "because they can I guess?" She said weird, and walked away lol
-
A lot of video games have male characters, it's good to have some female ones too
-
Shit they just want to play a female. Anyone defending themselves with sexism or what ever is just trying to trouble. Why do I have a female Titan? Because I want to. Because it doesn't look half bad in armor. Because I don't mind the figurine. Because variety in my characters.

Possibly smaller hitbox

6 RepliesFirstly, video games when they first started using character models generally were male, and especially FPS games simulating some type of War almost always had All male characters. Only recently have Multiplayer FPS games started adding female characters into them. Secondly, you act like Destiny is the only game where guys play as female characters, when guys have been playing female characters in MMO's for 15+ years. It's nothing new, and certainly not something original to Destiny. Third, nobody bats an eye when people play Tomb Raider games where everyone plays as Lara Croft. The argument will be made that you have no choice but to play as her, but you do have a choice of not to play the game at all. Fourth, woman have been playing video games just as long as guys, but no one's cares in the slightest when a woman plays as a male in games, so who cares if guys play as girls ? So when girls do it it's 100% fine, but when guys do it there are are obviously underlying reasons and/or issues , bunch of bullocks. Fifth, nobody over the age of 18 cares if your a girl playing a guy or a guy playing a girl in 1 out of thousands of video games. By this age the vast majority of players know that after playing so many games that half of the girls are guys and some of the guys are girls , and nobody cares. The Only people who care about it is 16 and under males, that group with a girl character and think the player is a girl, and get upset when they find out it's really a dude. You don't see 16 and under girls(or woman of any age) getting upset when they find out the male character they are grouped with is really another girl. Lastly, the extreme mass majority of gamers don't care what "Character" you play in an online multiplayer game. It's only a very small minority of young or inexperianced gamers that would even ask why a girl would play as a guy or a guy as a girl. In closing, there aren't all these hidden meanings and psychological reason, they aren't living out some weird fantasy of being a woman (or a man if your female) nor are they performing some act of dominating woman(or men) by controlling a pixelated character in a video game, and last but not least they aren't doing or thinking perverted crap about their pixelated female(male)character in a video game. And I'm offended at all of these stereo types, and titles, and misconceptions about gamers, when they should be viewed in a better light for rising above the gender gap that has blighted the Real world since man and woman have walked the earth. Real gamers do not care if your a guy or a girl , or a guy playing a girl or a girl playing a guy, they just care if your a good gamer or a bad one. (and if your bad, good gamers usually will try to help you get better , taking their own time to do so and asking Nothing in return) In the last 15 years I have played Hundreds of games, some the character I played was a sexless alien, some as guys, some as girls, some I was the monster, some I was an animal, some I have been insects etc, etc,,, so do I have some sexually repressed desire to be a sexless alien monster that mentally inhabits females minds to have animal sex with insects ? I think not, I just like to play video games , and the spice of video games is Variety.
-
I have a female titan because I don't like bulky characters. All the others are male though
-
I think male hunters look weird. So I have a female hunter. My warlock and my titan are male, because I don't think they look weird.
-
I've only ever done it once on a game. Rainbow 6 Vegas. Because female characters are slightly smaller so they make a slightly smaller target to hit in pvp.
