Cam someone tell me the story of drstiny in a nutshell?
I still trying.to wrap.my head around the awoken as well as the cobal and their story. Why did everyone die at the reef? Can so eine give me a high level over view of the races and what the heck happened?

What many fail to realize, Destiny is a MMO. MMOs typically do not have storylines or poorly made ones ( as seen here). It is more of a grinding for new gear kind of game. However, Bungie is trying their best with the new DLCs to add more story.

There is no story. Bungie forgot to include that at launch. But for hundreds of dollars over the next 9 years.... Bungie will provide you a full story of this game. Have fun!

the traveler came from deep space thousands of light years away. ever since the beginning of time, its been working its way to us... it finally reached earth in the year 9090 just in time to save the last city on earth from the darkness. It summoned ghosts to seek out guardians to defend the vast city that took centuries to build. The darkness sought our entire galaxy to destory the races that were made from humans. The speaker was the only one to survive collapse and he started a safe place for guardians to group and get weapons to defend the city... the tower. He has lived ever since our time right now in the 2000's and has become immortal by one ghost that escaped its place from the traveler and came to earth as quick as it could to start a defense against the darkness before it reached our galaxy... The speaker. And then when the traveler finally got here, the ghosts scattered and sought out fallen guardians to help fight the darkness.

See, there [i]is[/i] a story, but it's fragmented into all of these little pieces that are hard to put together. The main thing is that you're trying to save the Traveler. I think... You should read the Grimoire cards. They help to better explain the story
