3) After seeding the San'Shyuum on the planet of Janjur Qom, a fragment of Mendicant Bias attempted to take control of the vessel and travel to Earth to make amends for the crimes it committed against the Forerunners. An unknown complication occurred however and the keyship crashed on the surface of the San'Shyuum home world. Later the San'Shyuum discovered it and began to worship it. They wanted more artifacts and this led to the war that led to the foundation of the Covenant.
Now if you ask me... I think I win.

How did you arrive at #3?

The ship never would've been there if there wasn't an unknown complication. The San'Shyuum never would've found it and wouldn't have been looking for more Forerunner artifacts leading to the differences in opinions between the San'Shyuum and the Sangheili about if they should use these Forerunner artifacts.

Congratulations then! The reasoning behind why the event lead to the Covenant is a bit off, but ultimately I was just looking for the event.
