Your memory of video games as kids

It's funny cause I look at games and look toward to graphics and cut scenes, But I remember when I was younger where I was the kid angrily smashing the skip button cause I didn't give a crap about the story? I just wanted to play the game and I was only allowed to play for 30 minutes a week so they wasted that precious time. Feel free to share your child hood gaming memories. ps destiny would have been the greatest game for me as a kid because of the lack of cut scenes haha Edit: it seems like games these days focus way to much on graphics now and not the actual game play which is leading to a lot of broken repetitive games. Not only that but new games come out less often because of this. I'm tired of broken games. Remember when there were no updates or patches? Developers had to get it right the first time. They were well tested back then.

  • Ah the good days. When games had to come out right because "we'll patch it later" wasn't an option.

        • I probably could have bought an Xbone to go with my PS4 if I had saved the quarters I spent at the arcade between the ages of 18 and 25. Galaga, Centipede, Golden Axe, Heavy Barrel, Area 51, Spy Hunter, the list is so long I can't even begin. Playing with friends recreates the arcade experience for me to an extent, that's one of the things I found I liked about it once I finally got into social gaming.

        • Completely agree with your edit point. With today's 20 second attention span most people seem to have (in fact, most people won't finish reading this post), developers know that they just have to nail down how the game looks and make sure to add pretty extra items for you character. A lot less focus is put into gameplay like it was back in the day. They also know that they can get something out quickly to get that cash, and then patch the game after players find the problems for them (and then simply say, "We fixed this. Sorry for the inconvenience."). We have went absolutely backwards from the way gaming should have evolved. But people put of a poop ton of money for micro transactions for meaningless to the game stuff, and developers know they can make up the $ with micro transactions. They don't have to produce a game with a great story and mechanics. They don't have to have a polished game upon release. Look at CoD: Advanced Warfare. I am simply stunned at how many hundreds of dollars people are spending to open Advanced Supply Drops for weapon variations. People are literally spending $800-$1000 for slight variations of disc guns or armor items on a $60 game. People spend more time opening supply drops than enjoying the game. I know of people who actually hate the gameplay of Advanced Warfare, but keep spending money to try and gets specific guns. THIS IS WHAT GAMING HAS COME TO. Gameplay doesn't matter!!! This is why I may buy a copy of the Witcher 3. I hear that they focus on story and game polish before release. This makes me happy. I may just reward the developer and purchase the game. I hear it is pretty good.

          • Started on the Commodore 64 with games like Kings quest and police quest. Games that you actually had to enter command lines to play off of a floppy disc. Was around 4-5. After that it was Colecovision and games like miner 2049er, jumpman, pitfall and ET the game! Have pretty much played on every console over the years (except the one offs) Nintendo, Sega, Super Nintendo and 64. Turbographix 16 with Bonk and Splatterhouse. PS1 Masters of Terra Kasi, Bushido Blade. PS2 and PS3 - Too many to count. PC gaming back in the day including Warcraft 1 and 2, Quake, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Unreal.

          • Black and white graphics. Cassette loading times of over 5 minutes with the most horrendous sound. Basic left, right, up and down movements and if you were lucky, a jump. As a gamer that has played video games since they began I remember when all the new platforms came out and I would be amazed at the graphics and no doubt I will be for years to come.

            • I remember my dad and uncle hanging out at our house, or my uncles house, and playing some pool, and then throwing on the Intellivision to play some co-op Hover Force or B-17 Bomber amongst other classics. I also remember years later when The Legend of Zelda came out, my mom and uncle trading phone calls about how to beat certain levels or access certain secrets. Ah man, those were the days.. no Internets to turn to. Just discovery and sharing amongst friends and family.
