HoW is the Straw that Broke the Camels Back

I'm stepping away from Destiny; I'm quitting. First off I want to say 1) I don't think Destiny is necessarily a bad game. 2) I don't want attention for quitting. I just want to say what I dislike about the game and maybe that might help somebody out there make a decision about the game or help Bungie make it better. 3) I don't think anyone who plays it is stupid or a noob or whatever. 4) I want to do this with as much respect as possible. 5) Halo is my favorite game (top 3) and I have nothing against Bungie, this is just about Destiny. 6) I've played Destiny since Alpha, and switched to Xbone after Beta and have been playing since. So I have a good idea about the game. 7) To give you an idea of what kind of gamer I am I'll list some of my favorite games. Halo - Dark Souls/Bloodborne/Demon's Souls - Dishonored - Fallout- The Last of Us - LittleBigPlanet - Saint's Row - Uncharted - Gears of War - Dead Island So I'm gonna list the problems that I see in Destiny, then I'll list my personal reasons for stepping away. 1) Poor story. If everything that is in the Grimoire Cards was in Destiny through npc dialogue or cutscenes it would be much better. And HoW proved to me that Bungie can't tell a good story. Vanilla Destiny was awful, everyone knows that. And TDB didn't have any impact or meaning. HoW is strides better than the rest, but it still isn't good enough. Is it really too much to ask for a cutscene or two? 2) Destiny isn't the game that was advertised. That much is clear 3) Having to play a hard activity like VoG and not get the rewards after playing it 5+ times is unacceptable. This is only made worse with the expansions. 2 exotic weapons are tied to the same bounty, which is only awarded for completing 2 hard activities. I've played World of Warcraft and know that things shouldn't always be 100% drop rates, but Destiny isn't doing it right. 4) It's too grindy. Bungie have made steps to help this, but it still is very grindy, and the lack of content doesn't help. If there were more to do, I wouldn't mind having it take a long time to upgrade something, because I would be busy doing activities. 5) Lack of content. There just isn't enough variety to the game and things to do. You can only play the same strike so many times before it's not fun any more. Also there isn't enough gear/weapons. Everyone looks the same and uses the same guns, which is being fixed but it's still a problem. When Destiny was advertised it seemed like each Guardian would be different. Now of course with so many people playing you'd expect a lot of overlap, but there isn't a difference between players and the gear and weapons. Exotics were talked about like they were super special and were a part of your journey as a Guardian. And until recently, every max level character looked the same and everyone used the same weapons. The patrol zones are also not good. They are a fairly decent size but lack actual content and things to do in them. Patrols are empty. Why not have buildings with multiple levels that you can actually explore? Like on Mars, why aren't those buildings more then just a backdrop save for the one that you can go in to, but only a little bit. Right now, buildings are just ways to get to the next open area, and not areas themselves. 6) Time commitment not honored. It's not good game design that someone (average player) could put in 20 hours into an activity and not be rewarded with something. Most games reward skill first (of course) but also reward those who put time in. How many hours do I need to put in before I get something like The Crux of Crota. So I put time in building up this weapon, and then have to put even more time in to finally upgrade it. And what am I rewarded with? A horrible gun. Or playing Nightfall 3 times and getting nothing but shards/energy. Tying max level gear to end game content is dumb. In WoW, even if you're bad and playing solo, you still can make progress and get really good loot. The rewards for end game content set those players that completed it apart without keeping other players out. In WoW, you could be a high end game player and still play with your friend who just plays casually. In Destiny, if you want to do the Nightfall with your friend, you better hope he got lucky with VoG or CE and is max level or has the right weapons with the right damage type. If not, too bad. 7) This is similar to the 'lack of content' section, but there's a lack a variety. In strikes, end game content, pvp, weapons, gear, classes/subclasses. Why isn't there a patrol in the European Dead Zone? They have a map for it and it looks like it'd be fun to have a patrol map like that. 8) Bungie's refusal to fix seemingly simple issues and bigger issues that the community constantly brings up. There's no in game matchmaking system for Raids. There should be a social zone specifically dedicated to finding players to do stuff with. Why is it so necessary to go to a third party to find players for Destiny? Vault space was asked and asked by the community for months. And when it finally came, they added 24 spaces... now with HoW there's even more loot and no where to put it. Ghost shells are clearly in game and there's clearly a space made for them in your character screen. But 9/10 months after release and that isn't put in game? And how can a third party make fake weapon shaders but a professional dev team can't put that in? They don't balance pvp. Yes Destiny is a hard game to balance, but it shouldn't be how it is now. And in trying to balance the game they nurf Auto Rifles into the ground so much that nobody uses them. And they've let The Last Word which is glitched and broken stay out for months, and Felwinter's Lie with hammer forge and range finder nonsense stay out for months. They introduce something for players to do and grind out, and then punish them by filling their inventory with special ammo synth. And nothing is being done about it. There's more in this category, and I'm sure y'all can think of your own problems with it. Now I'll list my PERSONAL reasons for quitting Destiny (don't worry, this is a much shorter list). 1) I don't like the time sink without reward aspect of Destiny. I don't like playing a raid for 3 hours and getting nothing. Fun is the top priority in a game, but it should also reward you for the skill you have and then the time you put in. 2) I don't have friends to play with. We Destiny first came out I had tons of online friends and friends I know in person playing. But they slowly dropped out. Playing Destiny by yourself or with randoms is definitely not the way to go. 3) It isn't fun anymore. I'm just not having fun anymore like I used to, and I haven't burned myself out. I've played 500 hours in like 9 months which doesn't seem too much for me. I've put in that much time in other games and never got tired of them. Me not having fun is due to the lack of content and variety, not being properly rewarded, lack of good friends playing, feeling like I need to play every week for even an hour or I'll get left behind, being annoyed or aggravated while playing, and not feeling good after finishing playing for the day. 4) My time not being honored/rewarded. Right now I'm not in school and don't have a job. But this fall I'm going to school and will be getting a job sometime during the year (I am 21 and am continuing college this fall). So right now I can put in 7 hours in a day to accomplish something, but in the future I won't be able to do that as often. And now even when I do put in that much time, I don't get anything for it. The RNG system in Destiny is brutal and there's nothing you can do about it. 5) Destiny has lost that spark for me. I shouldn't feel stressed or annoyed about playing. I should be excited to get home and play the game and have fun and be relaxed while playing it. It just isn't what I want to be doing anymore. Edit: 6) I don't think I would have stuck with Destiny this long if it wasn't made by Bungie. Bungie created Halo which is one of my all time favorite games and if Destiny was made by someone else I honestly think I would have left months ago. So that's it. Due to various game issues and personal ones, I am quitting Destiny. I'm not mad or saying Destiny sucks. And I don't look down on anyone who does like Destiny. I've just come to the point where Destiny is not fun and not something that I want to play. I hope that this post may help others if they're struggling on a decision to keep playing or not. But if not, that's fine. You can like whichever game you want to. I don't really know exactly what I wanted to achieve with making this post. Maybe just putting it in words helped me come to this conclusion and feel better about myself. I know talking to people in person did that. So farewell, I hope the best for everyone. I'll be checking on this post and replying if you have any questions or anything. Send me out... with a bang!

    • The game will be dead soon if they don't fix PoE loot system. Trials gets badass gear and weapons. Prison of elders is so rare to get that most don't even know it its in the game

    • How can people complain about lack of content? I just don't get it. There's so much to do in this game with weekly activities that I rarely am able to do them all on every character. Sure, before the release of the two expansions there was a lack of content, but now, 2 raids, 3 poe levels that are on weekly reset, nightfall, iron banner, trials, weekly heroic etc anyone that has time for all of that on 3 characters clearly has far too much time on their hands lol.

      • You lost me at 5+ vog without the drops you want then talk about playing WoW and saying destiny didn't get it. If you played WoW you should know getting the full raid gear set took months for people to get it.

        • Your reasons to quit are all validated by your reasoning and posts and your personal feelings. So good luck BUT BUNGIE PLZ GIVE US MORE VAULT SPACE AND INCREASE SPECIAL AMMO STACK BY X100 OR SOMETHING. OR A WAY TO DISCARD THAT GOD DAMNED AMMO. THESE 2 SHOULD BE YOUR PRIORITY NOW. -blam!- OLD GENERATION CONSOLES NOT BEING ABLE TO HANDLE SHIT. IF THEY CANT HANDLE IT -blam!- THEM - THE NEW CONSOLES SHOULDNT SUFFER - JUST LIKE HOW WE XBOX PLAYERS SUFFER BECAUSE YOU REFUSE TO USE MICROSOFT AZURE SERVERS WHICH WOULD MAKE OUR GAMEPLAY BETTER BECAUSE PSN SUCKS AND CANT OFFER THE SAME SHIT.

              • First long post I read In awhile... Well done and I agree without everything u said. Bungie may be something in a year I've said .. But could be dead in two or three if they don't fix some stuff. More vault space Ghost skins Making character feel unique which is more positive with erheric light I suppose. So many little things. And yea ... Its mindnumbing boring! Couldn't imagine how amazing destiny would be if the world was even fallout 3 immersive! Gta5 witcher skyrim ect... This needs to just be open and morrrrre stuff and little less Grindy

100% agree. Times two for the part about being much more forgiving of Destiny purely based on Bungie. If any other developer made this game, I wouldn't give it a second thought.

                    • We started large in numbers and now there is a few core gamers left in this game. Also the few friends I play with in this game like me all bought the expansion pass or had limited editions. I'm done after this dlc by day 3 we beat the 35 Poe. So I hear you I think all of us are on the fence but honestly I think my group is done after this dlc I'm not paying For comet or whatever it is called. Why should I when it will cost around 50$ I rather spend that money on battlefront. Not that many people have bought this dlc and I think even less will buy the next one

                    • One MAJOR flaw I see in these types of posts, is that the people forget what this game is, an MMO. As such, there is a definite "grind" too it, and you specifically choose to roll with this. Another point; this game is also supposed to have a social aspect too it, as it is AN MMO. And guess what? IT DOES. Are you not pleased with playing with your friends and buddies online, trying to defeat a boss using COORDINATION, and TEAMWORK? You say you've been playing this game since alpha, yet you go through the motions adding hours upon hours to this game you've decided to quit, and for the wrong reason.

                      • That sucks man, if you want friends to play with on the ps3 add me. I've had phases of friends in play with that were all randoms, and we've all grown into a pretty good group, only difficult part is that we all have different schedules. Loot can't really be helped since it is dominantly RNG. You should give Bungie a little more credit though, since you've played since vanilla launch they have been listening to the community and been making improvements to the game. Game development is tough work too, it's not so easy to implement system changes and bug fixes without bringing in more bugs. We all know that the storytelling in game is almost non existent, but with HoW compared to TDB there's at least a step in the right direction. Cut content aside, I'm sure over time Destiny will shape up to be a beast of a game so long as they keep improving. Hope you don't lose all hope, I've been playing since October and I can still find reasons to play. :)
