Never played the original or the sequel. Bought it last week during the Sony sale and started playing it today. Coming from Destiny, the first person combat is a little janky. Took my a while to give up on trying to melee things (it's terrible). Even though it looks sharp and runs smooth it feels dated for some reason. And the controls are... there are just a lot of things to figure out and it doesn't do the best job explaining them. For example, I had to go online to figure out how to use a grenade. Those are the negatives. The positives are an extremely cool atmosphere when you're at the different subway stations/towns. I look forward to reaching the next one just to snoop around and listen to the dialog. The voice acting is really good along with having cool Russian accents. The story has been good so far too. The random dialogue and notebook entries do an excellent job filling in extra details. The "survival" part of the survival horror in this game is done pretty well. The "twist" is a gas mask you have to wear in certain areas which essentially put a timer on your exploration. I wouldn't recommend cutting things this close but... I got to the last encounter from the first time you go above ground with like 20 seconds left in my gas mask tank. I only just made itfrom rushing there and looting bodies I found on the way for scraps of air. I had to battle a bunch of mutant dogs while juggling putting my mask on and taking it off (you can breath for a little while without the mask). After all the dogs were dead these dragon things swooped in, my tanks were totally empty and my vison was foggy and heart pumping from lack of oxygen. Seconds away from death I dove into this bus and made my way back underground to complete the level... It was... intense. The good kind.
