Why K/D isn't always a reliable indicator

It's simple: people improve. Your K/D takes into account all played games. That means if you were trash for the first few months of the game (like I was to a certain extent), those games are going to pull down the ratio even if you get a lot better. I'm much better than I was. A better indicator if you have some time would be to scope out a sizable sample of a player's recent games. This has been a public service announcement.

  • If only they did something crazy like add a true team based game type. Other than just death match or death match with control points. And then score the game on more than just kills. Could even add fun stuff like base defense and different classes to set up and repair vs classes for offense etc. But with nothing but death match, I guess k/d does matter the most. I suck at death match so I know mine will always suck! And the only time I really go to the crucible is for exotic bounties. Because of the lack of real team based games. I just find it boring as it is now.

  • There's too many variables in this game for it to be a definitive measure of someone's skill. Even players in organised teams have designated roles that can negatively impact their K/D, I don't know why people get so hung up on it... I remember playing private matches on MW2 (sorry for bringing that franchise up) with my cousins and brother, and my two cousins always had K/D ratios up over 3, mine was just under 2, but I won nearly every private game we played, they just played in ways they could preserve their K/D ratios in public games.

  • also the fact there are people who play crucible for bounties and marks without try harding, or people who play solo 100% of the time and rarely get placed on good teams. k/d in unranked playlists has never and will never be an accurate indicator of skill in fps games. and only idiots and 12 year olds would say otherwise.

      • Well it's understandable if you began when everyone was like level 30, ie Christmas noobs. But if you're blaming that and you played from launch then you just suck lol.

        • I cared about KD for the first 2 months. Now I just play with IRL Friends -blam!-ing around still fairly decent tho

        • Kd is shit. Supers are everywhere, it's possible to get a high kd here. There is almost no reliable defense against them. What matters is being a team player, and winning. But there's no method of measuring either on the destiny app.

PvP in this game does not have a learning curve so it sounds like a really poor excuse. Hell, not even the proper MMO's have much of a learning curve - and they're way more complicated than a point-and-click shooter on console.

            • Crucible is based on kills and points. You make headshots or get assists, those points also count for total teamscore...so kd counts a little in my opinion..points a little more then kd.

            • So if they start out playing the game with shitty k.d and improve it over time it doesn't count lol I thought that's what k.d. is for

            • Also this game doesn't show you average kills per game which is biggest for me,I would rather someone that goes 20-10 or even 20-15 on average rather than someone who goes 9-3 or 12-4 all the time. Also we should know our average score per game as well so we see who actually does things in game

              • It will be somewhat accurate. Other people were also not as good when they first started playing so their KD's are also being pulled down though maybe not as much or maybe perhaps much more. And yes, it is much easier to have a higher KC when you play in fireteams than when going at it by yourself. That said, if someone has a much better KD than someone else, it's fairly likely that they are simply much better. And if you're KD is less than 1.00 then I am pretty certain that you're just not very good regardless of the circumstances.

              • Not to mention those who play in teams will always have a highly inflated kd as opposed to someone who always plays solo

                  • Protip: learn crucible on one character. He'll be your training wheels so to speak. Once you're satisfied with how you play, gradually work into playing crucible on another character - doesn't have to be a different playstyle/class either. This guy will be your up to date k/d

                  • Not to mention game types. It's much easier to get high K/D in control than in Rumble for example. Plus which class you use matters. It's much easier to get 2+ kills with your super as a Hunter than a Titan for example.

                    • Your KD can also go down when you just enter a game where the other team is already dominating and defeat is imminent, how can you do good there?
