• Ok. This post is ages old, but if anyone reads this, I want to clarify something everyone seems to have missed. This is natural, as I do not believe anyone in this conversation is a Christian scholar. John 1:17 actually says "For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." Biblically speaking, the law was also referred to as the Mosaic Covenant. See where I am going? According to the Christian faith, the heavily ritualistic nature of the old Covenant is fulfilled in Christ when he dies and rises again. Christians HEAVILY emphasize you cannot have the death without the resurrection or the resurrection without the death. (this is important in, like, four paragraphs). The gospel of John is incredibly dedicated to the identity of Jesus Christ as "The Truth" or an embodiment of the truest part of reality. It was through him that the universe was created, according to the gospel of John itself. This is widely interpreted as the 'science clause' of Christianity: a passage stating that the study of the natural world is not forbidden, but encouraged as an indirect study of Christ. Whether you believe this or not is irrelevant. It does not matter if you think that Christians are anti-science, (a purely post-Darwinian phenomenon in my opinion, both on the side of Christians and their accusers). What matters is that this is an internal interpretation of the Bible. As a side note, before we go on, we should also note that many interpretations of the Bible see the story of Noah and the Flood as a symbol of Christ: the story one who would save humanity from being wiped out by their sins, except better than Noah. Christ would offer refuge to all. Now, what does all this mean? It means, as far as I can see, that the writer (Joe Staten) of Halo 1, 2, and 3, for some reason intended Master Chief to be a Christ figure that dispels the myths of religion with Truth. Odd, but hear me out. Chief's timeline is very Christ-like. He enters the story from nowhere to save humanity from the Flood. Along the way he demonstrates the absolute foolhardiness of the Covenant and exposes their lies and corruption (read: Jesus and the Pharisees). Master Chief ends up sacrificing his life for humanity in this heroic act, and in doing so gives the universe grace and truth. However, after the credits, when we think he is dead... he shows back up in a cyro-chamber... and we know that he will come again. Now. I think this is just a plot device to provide a spiritual underpinning to HALO. It isn't meant to be the lens by which you view the game... but is a really cool plot device.

Prior to the release of Halo 3, we witnessed TV spots in which towards the end would display the word "BELIEVE". This next one, read from the Gospel of John 1:1-7 references to John-117 inspiring hope in those around him in the fight for humanity: "The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe."

  •
Posted by: Dominic24 Good find, surprised this hasnt been mentioned before. Yet another link to the bible in the halo stroylines.
it HAS been mentioned before. For one, his bible verse is wrong. It's Revelation 1:17 where He says that. may I?
ORIGIONALLY POSTED AT: 11/8/2004 3:20 PM PST SPARTAN117, John. After my previous posts pretaining to the Biblical references in halo, others have attempted at pointing them out as well. One of which being MC's name. Some insist that it points to the book of John chapter 1 verse 17, or John 1:17. Where infact it would make much more sense if it would refer to a different book that John wrote, Revelations. Namely Revelations 1:17, where Christ reveals Himself as the First and the Last. Revelations 1:17
When I saw him, I fell at his face as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me and said, "Don't be afraid! I am the first and the last..."
This is relative to Spartan 117 because in The Fall of Reach he was first and last in nearly everything. The Fall of Reach, page 53
"First drop in three minutes," Mendez barked. "Trainee 117, you're first."...

..."not yet," John told him. He marched onto the dorpship. No one else was on board... ...Kelly paused and asked,"Who's getting left behind?" "No one," John said."Just get in." He made sure he was the last one on.
The Fall of Reach, page: 42
...John protested. "I was first." "Yes, you were first," Mendez explained ,"but your team was last."

Check out the "Forerunner and a prophet" link in my sig. for further proof. It's cool that you found this, but I wish to clarify that it is not new, and that the verse you posted is inaccurate. ~Weasel [edit] PS thank you Tjdoom and R4ck3r [Edited on 1/10/2005 4:14:26 PM]

  • Spartans were bad dudes. At the battle of Thermopylae, 300 Spartans under Leonidas, along with 7000 greek volunteers held a pass against Persian king Xerses and about 10,000 of his troops. The Persians were denied the pass, until they discovered an alternate route, which allowed them to get behind the greeks (pardon the pun). The remaining Spartans and about 700 volunteers stayed and fought to the death to delay the Persian army. When the persian army came into view, a greek was rumored to say the sky would be dark with Persian arrows. The Spartan reply was, we will fight in the shade. They had a special on Thermopylae on the History Channel a while back. Pretty wild sheed.

  • Sorry Its already been spotted. Heres John1:17 from different bibles. dn't see how it relates to halo though The Law was given by Moses, but Jesus Christ brought us undeserved kindness and truth. For the law was given through Moses; God's unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. Moses gave the law, but Jesus Christ gave this loving kindness and truth. We got the basics from Moses, and then this exuberant giving and receiving, This endless knowing and understanding-- all this came through Jesus, the Messiah.

  • Actually John 1:17 says "For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ." And as for spartans they were warriors trained from birth, they were never defeated and wore red tunics so even if they are cut then the enemy will not see them bleed.

  • I always associated Master Chief's name with Demolition Man. He's a Spartan, his name is John. In Demolition Man, Stalone's character is John Spartan and he breaks stuff good.
