You will get an email with a code that gives you Xbox store credit. You can buy whatever you want. You should receive email a bout 4-5 days before release.[spoiler]I've done this several times. No worries. You should be predownloaded and ready by launch.[/spoiler]

Fair enough, you will have to wait until the day of release to get your game, but you do get the bonus to offset the minor delay.
