Some of you really need some educating
http://www.livescience.com/21491-what-is-a-scientific-theory-definition-of-theory.html
A scientific theory summarizes a hypothesis or group of hypotheses that have been supported with repeated testing. If enough evidence accumulates to support a hypothesis, it moves to the next step—known as a theory—in the scientific method and becomes accepted as a valid explanation of a phenomenon.
When used in non-scientific context, the word “theory” implies that something is unproven or speculative. As used in science, however, a theory is an explanation or model based on observation, experimentation, and reasoning, especially one that has been tested and confirmed as a general principle helping to explain and predict natural phenomena.
http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Scientific_theory
Theories are the main goal in science and no explanation can achieve a higher "rank" (contrary to the belief that "theories" become "laws" over time).
"Theory" is a Jekyll-and-Hyde term that means different things depending on the context and who is using it. While in everyday speech anything that attempts to provide an explanation for a cause can be dubbed a "theory", a scientific theory has a much more specific meaning. Scientific theory is far more than just a casual conjecture or some Joe's guesswork. A theory in this context is a well-substantiated explanation for a series of facts and observations that is testable and can be used to predict future observations.

Creationist and Intelligent design proponents often like to describe the theory of evolution as just a theory. This relies on equivocating the common usage of the term theory (meaning "idea" or "guess") with the scientific meaning. Theories are the single highest level of scientific achievement and nothing is just a theory - that would be like saying Bill Gates is just a multibillionaire. Additionally, one might say that the notion of evolution is "just a theory" in the same way that Cell Theory and the Theory of Gravitation (fundamental principles of biology and physics, respectively) are "just theories."
This argument played out with hilarious ramifications in the recent decision of the Florida State Board of Education to teach evolution as a "scientific theory." Apparently, the creationists on the Florida SBOE thought that this was a "compromise" — by making evolution a "scientific theory" at law, they thought, it would weaken the position of evolution. After all, then it would be "just a theory," right? Wrong! This "compromise" actually puts evolution on the exactly right footing — at the highest tier of science — and ensures that students will be taught about what the term "scientific theory" really means, hopefully eventually drawing the sting of the colloquial meaning confusion.
To quickly counter this argument, you can say "Gravity is just a theory too", and they will be forced to turn to some other argument.
I hope this isn't too much reading for you all. I even underlined the important parts.

Edited by U6757109: 2/6/2015 2:51:03 PMNot every scientific theory is supported by the same degree of evidence. Some theories are pretty concrete like gravity or evolution. Others, not so much. Learn the difference between hypotheses, theories and laws. • Popular Hypotheses: Abiogenesis, God • Popular Theories: General Relativity, Evolution • Popular Laws: Gravity

It's turtles all the way.

Has the big bang been proven? Has it been recreated?

It's the best guess we have, and I like it.

14 RepliesNo, gravity is fake, dinosaurs never existed, the earth is 8000 years old, and shrek will return to show you all

Evolution still makes more sense than "it just sorta appeared because this 2000 year old book said so".

Well some of the Best scientific minds who did a number of wonderful things, Brilliant things, were 100% convinced that the world was flat. There is always room for possibilities in science. I believe that Jehovah is God but still:)

9 RepliesMy arguments against evolution are not about semantics. Evolution is a theory just like creation is a theory. Both have evidence that support and contest them. Why do I pick Creation over Evolution? I look at the different evidence against both theories. I then watch or read what leading scientists from both theories say about that evidence (yes Creationists are scientists too).

2 RepliesIt's painfully obvious that it is actually The Master Unicorn who created the world two centuries ago. You can't prove that he doesn't exist with your mountains of science, therefore he is real.

"Things don't exist simply because you believe in them! Thus sayeth the Almighty Creature in the Sky! " - Dr. Banjo, in arguing against evolution, Futurama. Yes I just quoted a cartoon. Shits hilarious.

7 Repliesthe word "Theory" is not the best one to use, but it is unlikely to change soon

I can not stand when people think of theories as hypotheses, learn the definition!

14 RepliesIt's pretty funny how this idiot wasting his own time posting something everyone already knows. Please link studies saying how you need water to live.

2 RepliesThe big bang theory?
Ya I'd say it's a good show
11 RepliesFWIW, nobody in academia talks about "laws", " theories", and "fact" or what they supposedly mean more fervently than people in religious debates. Religious apologists continually show their ignorance of science when they spout the "it's only a theory" line, but those on the opposite side of the debate tend to get too obsessed arguing over the semantics of particular terms. What is important is to make reasonable arguments based on the evidence and previous work in the given area, because that's not going to change and it should hopefully get the debate back on track.

13 RepliesThe reason people turn to science is because the simple human mind can't even begin to comprehend something as big as God. So we immediately think he must not be real, then we start pointing out the similarities between us and monkeys and call it science
