Something terribly wrong has happened

Fellow gammers, whether you play Xbox, Playstation, Wii or PC, we have a problem. While some of you hold arguments about things that are wrong with Destiny, or some of you defend it, there is a definite disappointment in this game. But I am not here to profess my deepening sorrow, and cast negative comments on Destiny, today I ask you to look at the bigger picture. With the launch of Destiny many were disappointed with what they received but Destiny was not the only game, games like Elder Scrolls online were met with as much negativity, now I read that CoD AW and SoM were not games that were worth playing. Most of these had many excited fans awaiting their arrival, but to no avail. Watch Dogs, Titan Fall, Elder scrolls online, SoM, Destiny, CoD AW. What has happened to our games? These major titles... Have fallen to dust, and those that promised a long and enjoyable reign as kings of games went like dust into the winds. So I ask of you, why has this happened? why is no one satisfied? The answer is quite simple dear friends, gaming companies no longer see the need to create good games, all they want is to push their disappointing games on us and take our money, there is little effort put into games any more and what are we to do about it besides hope? This is a depressing time. In regards to all gaming it seems we have lost. Games are no longer defined, we no longer get the enjoyment we used to get from games, communities tear each other apart because one of them has a different box then the other... I fear that unless something changes, the era of great games will come to an end and we will be forced back to playing our old games, stop playing all together or continue to spend our money on these... Games... There is little hope. For all of us, so please stop with your pointless bickering between one another and realize that we are all being played. Thank you for your times.

        • Honestly? You want a console with consistently fantastic games and insane value per dollar spent? Buy a 3DS. Wii U isn't far behind it (look at reviews for Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Wind Waker HD, Tropical Freeze, etc. Look at previews for the upcoming Xenoblade game).

          • I would say that the main problem is that all the games that come out nowadays try to cater to every fan base and get as many people to buy the game as possible - instead of making a really great game that only a specific type of gamer would like. During its reign, Socom II had more people playing it than all of xbox live. Why hasn't a company created a similar game?? Because that game only caters to gamers who want to be super involved with tons of communication and teamwork. Lets face it, the majority of players nowadays don't even like to plug in their mic or don't have one. Therefore, you have to create a game like COD that anyone with half a brain can play and feel like they are good at. "Hey, look at me, I am prestige ten." "Yeah but you have a 0.5 k/d and only win 1/10 matches." "So what, I have this cool skull next to my name and I have all the guns unlocked." "Wait, how are you talking to me? You don't have your mic plugged in." "........"

              • The thing is, you're right. You're also wrong. It's the corporations that are in control of these games. The publishers. The investors. They only care about your enjoyment if it's making them money. Great games such as Halo or Borderlands or even Zelda have one thing this game doesn't: A SOUL. There's nothing we can do. We can't even use our wallets to vote anymore, because they're literally force-feeding us the games they want us to have. I can think of so many amazing games I've played that were designed entirely by a small group of people with a goal and a dream (mostly on PC), and none of them were funded by Activision or THQ or any of those terrible companies. Their job is to hype the game, even if the act of hyping takes away from the development money..which they control almost entirely.

              • People are incredibly spoilt with games these days, because games are being played by more and more people each year, larger and majorly differing audiences are being clumped together to play the same game experience so obviously it's pretty much impossible to make a game everyone will enjoy. It was much easier to make a game 10+ years ago because there was a smaller audience. Now because of higher competition within the gaming industry and a larger audience, companies need to create games that try and appeal to as many audience categories in order to make enough capital so they can stay viable and not go under. A common arguement I see is that indie developers are the only ones really taking care of the gaming community, however how many indie games are super successful? The competition is incredible, either you make a game that is a hit and you make heaps of money, or it falls flat. Yes the gaming world now revolves a lot more around money, but this is precisely why we need to vote with our wallets as that is the only thing that will change developers games. That's my two cents P.S yes destiny is flawed, I still have stacks of fun with it, and to me that's what gaming is all about

                  • I do agree that recently we as gamers have been getting games that are subpar one after another at an alarming rate. Destiny for example the lack of story was appalling, but I still was able to enjoy playing with my friends and helping them out. This game had potential and still does if they release free content and fix the issues people have. As for the new Call of Duty I'm enjoying it and haven't played destiny since it's release guess I'm one of the few who haven't experienced game breaking lag. Some gaming studios like Bethesda, Bioware, Rocksteady, and CD Projekt deliver quality games and look forward to upcoming titles from them 2014 may have been a bust with the exception of a few titles, but I think 2015 will be a better year for games.

I think the biggest problem is people keep buying PVP games expecting content games. And I definitely think that's where Destiny fell apart, because it was a bait and switch - all the developement info releases made it sound like this big exploratory game, but in reality it was pvp with a tiny bit of PVE built with the sole purpose of furthering pvp (equips). On top of that gaming has become mainstream rather than a niche so there is a much larger casual market and the companies are targetting them more than the dedicated players.

                        • I'm still loving destiny so far, but i kinda agree. Watch dogs got old pretty fast (last time i played it was a couple weeks after it came out) but i should have seen that coming. It's a gta clone, and i don't even like the real gta. And I'm not surprised about AW, I've been taking a break from CoD. Any xbox players care to explain why titanfall was such a let down though?

Dark Souls 2 was a great game. Arguably not as good as the first, but still very very good.

                                  • The answer is simple: AAA games are just companies trying to milk a franchise. Also some series need to die out to make room for new ones. The market is over saturated. So while people think this is bad I think this could potentially kill off stale games to let fresh new IPs in the door. Not AAA games but just plain old new games.

                                  • I agree with you on many points that over the past 3-4 years video games have been underwhelming outside the sports genre. CoD games have been expendable for the most part. Though I do believe AW will be a game I play for at least a year. SoM is excellent and I've only played a little bit. It's similar in style to Assassins Creed, but with the LOTR logic to it. The console war is pointless. We get the console that best fits our gaming pleasures and I think most would say they are more than satisfied with whatever purchase they make. Very well thought out post my friend. I just wish more people would see this and agree with you.

                                    • Having been around since well video games got started, I can tell you what has changed. Information is more readily available than ever before and people (as people do) tend to read into that information what they will. You can go back and look at article after article about Destiny pre-release. You can go back to the Alpha and the Beta tests and you'll find that the devs didn't promise anything that they didn't deliver. Well other than a completely open world which anyone with half a brain should have known was impossible. However, what happened is we the community speculated ourselves into believing Destiny to be much bigger and grander than it was ever intended to be. So our collective disappointment really lies on our own shoulders. I think that if you look back at the great games of the past and exposed them to todays information/speculation society that they all would fall short as well. I don't think that gaming has changed all that much. I think that we are the ones that have changed.

It's a bargain. That's $380 without tax and it will trickle out within a decade! How fast! Half of the players won't even be playing games when the end of it comes out.
