Before reading, please note that there will be fowl language. You've been warned.
Ok, so I recently got the Thorn Bounty on my Hunter class... We can all see where this is going. The Crucible section of this bounty is the biggest pile of shit if you don't have a void sub-class or any good void weapons. I've got a Void Sniper and a Void Assault Rifle. Seeing as Assault rifles have recently been nerfed, the thing's pretty much useless because of it's already low damage rate (considering I'm shooting the head not the body). The sniper is also difficult to use because there are no good spots on any map to really shoot from. And I haven't got any heavy void weapons. I'd be completely fine with this bounty if it weren't for the 2 point penalty upon dying. For some, that's probably fine, but I generally have a k/d ratio of around 0.47 so essentially, I take 1 step forward 2 steps back. This bounty is just plain unfair for those who aren't any good at Crucible or don't have good Void weapons. It's just plain stupid. I've read all different strategies and tried a bunch of them, but I keep getting thrown in games with spastic shotgunners, supreme snipers, maniac machine-gunners, assault-rifle wielding psychopaths and pyromaniacs with rocket launchers who just beat me to a bloody pulp. Seriously Bungie, how the -blam!- do I do this? I know I'm having a rant, but this part of the game's made me rage harder than playing Ninja Gaiden, and that was a bitch to beat.
Can anyone help please?

Its a challenge. If you aren't that good at crucible then you don't deserve the Thorn. Don't complain that it isn't fair to people who aren't as good in the crucible. You should play to your strengths. Also remember that the weapons grade doesn't matter, so a rare weapon is just as good as a legendary. If you're using a shotgun, blink and stay close to your opponent. If you are using a fusion, precharge around corners and find a fast charging fusion. Remember even a rare void fusion will be as good as a legendary. If you're using a sniper, camp as far as possible. Only play on big maps; I think there is a playlist for such maps. As for your heavy, bring a HMG. I know a launcher is easier to use however, heavy machine guns have a higher chance to get more kills, as there is more ammo. If you have word of crota, then you shouldn't have a problem Just remember that you don't need to rush anyone. This isn't Iron banner therefore, you don't have risk your life to save anyone. TL;DR play to your strengths, don't rush any one, a match where you get 1 kill and zero deaths is better than a match where you get 18 kills and 25 deaths. Good luck and remember, the point of this bounty is to filter out the unworthy, so stay strong and you should do just fine.

I completed this bounty with some difficulty, but it can be done and I did it as a Gunslinger. Be careful and be patient. I receive this bounty way before the DLC and pre-Thorn buff. I used the void assault rifle, void shotgun. I had no heavy weapons at the time which makes it a little more difficult. If you have the vanguard mark, buy the M18 Harm's Way (void heavy LMG). If you have a good raid group and have people carry you through the hard raid, get the hand cannon (Word of Crota). Aethon's Epilogue is garbage now and doesn't hold up very well in the Crucible. It takes some time, and way harder if you are hunter. Just be patient and don't rush into a firefight unless you know the right angles to flank you opponent or opponents.

I just completed mine last week with a good void fusion rifle and a void rocket launcher. I thought I would never get get it done because I suck at pvp but with patience and about a weeks time I got better and started dominating with my fusion rifle.
-
Thats why its an exotic bounty. It is meant to be hard
-
Just get a shotgun and camp a lot
-
I did it as a Hunter
-
I had to do this bounty for my wife because she is no good at crucible herself. She is a hunter. I used some rare fusion rifle and had it done in just a day or two
-
I am a hunter and I completed the crucible part by being very careful using a void sniper and machine gun. Just go into good hiding spots and snipe and try and get a good K/D ratio and you will be playing about 15-20 games to complete that section of the bounty
-
One very good reason to start a warlock. Oh, you have one single hunter character ? Considering bladedancer is the easiest class to play in the crucible, it makes sense that at least ONE task should be harder for hunters. (hint: I suck at crucible, and I managed to finish Thorn...)
-
Sword breaker shotgun spree. It took me two days with that weapon
-
I've been stuck on this quacking bounty forever.

2 RepliesI'm waiting for the "fowl" language.

Just eat some cereal

Before you attempt it again, you have to arm yourself accordingly. You need to get either Atheons epilogue or word of Crota, any void fusion rifle (plug one) or shotgun (swordbreaker), and either corrective measure, truth or pretty much any other void heavy weapon. Once you have 3 void weapons equipped go in there and use your weapons situationally. Skirmish matches are the quickest and you either dominate or get dominated in that match type. Stick with your team and you can end up going 14-6. Just aim for a positive kill death ratio for each match and you'll get it. As long as your 1.00+ at the end of a match, you're progressing. Good luck, guardian.

I had to do it with my hunter as well void machine gun and hang around heavy drops. Sucks now though because players can't drop heavy anymore.
-
Only took me 8 matches as my hunter
-
I did the entire thorn bounty as a hunter in 1 day. You can handle it buddy
-
I've done it twice. About to start my third ahh. Just use a void shotgun on "Clash" or a void Sniper on the bigger maps.
-
Use truth with the VOG sniper and any old primary.
-
Ok, deep breaths, brotha. If I could do it, so can you. MIDA Blue void sniper Void rocket launcher Be patient. Plan your kills. And have a weapon handy for those 'oh shit' moments to prevent you from ruining your k/d ratio (MIDA for me) Good luck. Stick to it... Thorn is a beast.
-
I mostly just used preadyths revenge and corrective measure
-
I did it in 12 games
-
Just learn to be good with the void weapons you get if you don't have some get some... easy
-
Thorn is only for people who deserve it. Get good or dismantle the bounty.

1 ReplyI used a Light/Beware FR (void) and the Corrective Measure. After a couple matches of rumble, it was all said and done.

Edited by RichDunbar: 2/28/2015 5:49:55 PMEDIT: I just noticed this is from October... Still good advice for Hunters doing the Thorn Bounty. I've done it with Hunters twice now. The first in Iron Banner taking advantage of my level 32 armor with atheons epilogue, praedyths revenge and a void against all odds, and the second in regular crucible using a word of Crota, a void plug one.1 and void against all odds. However you should know that green (uncommon) and blue (rare) weapons are just as effective as purple (legendary) and gold (exotic) weapons in regular crucible. If you play any amount of PVE you likely dismantle hundreds of these per week. So pay attention to them and keep a void shotty with high impact and a void fusion rifle with high impact and range. You can also watch the gunsmiths inventory, he sells a new batch of weapons every 3 hours. Green and blue heavy LMG's also have elemental damage so pay attention to those. If you want a decent legendary heavy LMG that's void you should look at the Vanguard Quartermaster and get the MG18A. Last tip, run with the leader on your crucible team. When he shoots at someone you should shoot with your Atheons epilogue as well, assists count as kills for this bounty. And make sure to make use of your invis abilities in your BladeDancer class when using the shotty.
