Is Bungie completely out of touch?

I just read the IGN article and this caught my attention about raids: "Yes, they [raids] will be difficult, and they will absolutely require communication and cooperation. That’s why Bungie isn’t supporting matchmaking for them; the developers don’t want them to be played by disparate groups of strangers. " http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/07/30/destiny-the-endgame-is-only-the-beginning-ign-first Destiny is a game build FROM THE GROUND UP as a co-op shooter that connects random people together, in the wild exploring and pretty much every aspect of the game. The fact that Bungie doesn't think a "group of strangers" can't accomplish something challenging together goes completely against what Destiny is about. Frankly, it sounds pretty elitist and I am shocked this is what Bungie thinks of player interaction. It doesn't even make sense to restrict raids because people can always invite their friends if they want. The ability for people to play with random people does not mean they can't even play with a group of 6 people you know. Only, you may not always be able to find a group of 6 people you know who want to play a raid. I guess Bungie didn't realize not everyone starts off a game with a huge "clan", you play and meet people over time till eventually you have a group of friends for this kind of thing. By doing this Bungie is denying us the ability to make those connections with other players which frankly makes the entire "co-op" aspect of the game pointless. Another thing I want to address is mics, lets bring them back for strikes, exploration, crucible and let us turn them off if we want. The emotes don't provide enough range of "emotions" to convey a message to someone and not having a mic hinders coordination. I understand it was removed to prevent people annoying each other but it causes more problems than it "solves".

  • I'm sure you'll have plenty of time to play and meet people before you're ready to play a raid. You don't need a clan. You need five friends, not a very big requirement.

    • How out of touch are you? In small tiny games like World of Warcraft, you generally take your A game people into the toughest content ONLY. Not randoms that you don't really know. That's basically what this is. The normal strikes you can roll with whoever, the harder content, trusted friends only. I'm sure they will continue tweak it so don't complain until you actually get to that point. Later on you will probably learn to appreciate why they did it this way.

      • A group of 5 random other people will not use voice chat and will quit out of your raid 45 minutes into it. So your going to need to find friends that play the game. Bungie wants this to be a social activity. (Proximity chat would help greatly in this) But considering your going to have to play passed level 20 before trying a raid, you'll hopefully have had a chance to make some Destiny friends by then.

      • Here is an example of your average pug group from WoW We wipe at 5% or 10% "You suck" "-blam!- this group" "Learn to play noobs" "Guys chill" "stfu fggt" Player has left the group Player has left the group Player has left the group DO YOU WANT THIS TO HAPPEN!?!?! I do not want the raids to turn into interceptor 2.0 where idiots can not use their damn brains to figure out how to take out an easy target. Nerf X, Nerf Y, his ability is too OP, please increase time until platform despawns, I need like half an hour to plan my next move.

I don't really care about this whole matchmaking raids thing, but I think it's pretty funny that they don't want us to have to play with strangers and that's basically all I'll ever do.

          • First thing I thought when I read your title: "no. . . " Read your post and I answer again, "no." I understand the reasoning for having no matchmaking so I don't count it against them for not including match making. HOWEVER maybe the option to start a matchmade game would be good. Let people fail the raid over and over so that way they will go and invite JUST people they met and know for sure they can communicate with. In the end people are going to just invite their friends if they can, or invite players they met that are skilled and they can communicate with. This is where joining forces with your friends and enemies from the crucible would be helpful. THINK ABOUT IT. You start a crucible match, you have a close game, both teams are definitely skilled and experienced. You meet an adversary that has close or greater skill then you, message them with "good game, very impressive work." and, if he also has good sportsmanship, enemies can become allies and you work together to take down the vault of glass. FIND your friends, whether it be through the blood of the crucible, or through comradeship in the fight against the darkness. If its matchmaking it would be "I got lucky and found someone who was skilled enough and helped us through the Vault." Patrol will help you find those friends and allies that can get you through the raids.

            • Maybe if you spent less time swearing at people and calling them noobs or whatever kids say these days, and more time actually trying to make friends, you wouldn't be at this impass. Kindness and respect, mostly respect goes a long way toward making friends. I personally have plenty of people to play Destiny with. More than enough to go on raids almost any time I want to. I feel this is the right decision. It feels like Bungie is encouraging people who don't have online friends, to make friends while leveling up, or doing end game strikes/etc. Then you can take this group of friends into a difficult raid to get awesome gear. Don't just send random friend requests because you like someones gear, or like how they look. (I know I don't accept random friend requests hardly ever) let the ample matchmaking system do it's job for missions. Also, having a mic is a huge plus. If you find someone else with a mic that you get along with, then you're golden. TLDR: Get a mic, Respect others, Use matchmaking in non-raid activities to meet people.

              • I believe it should be in the game. Bungie should expect gamers to understand what they could be getting themselves into. If it is as difficult as they say people will just wont use the matchmaking system but to not include it is slightly mind boggling. OP has a good point with "Destiny is a game build FROM THE GROUND UP as a co-op shooter that connects random people together, in the wild exploring and pretty much every aspect of the game. " This is why it should be in the game. They are trying to build a social focused game. I hope they reconsider before launch.

              • I disagree, remember you have to get up to level 20 before starting raids so spend that time meeting people in game and adding them to your friends list (in strikes and story). Bungie have got this spot on, without all players communicating and invested in the raid you won't even get past the first areas.

You're out of touch. Yes, Destiny is meant to bring people together, but I can tell you from experience raiding in MMO's that the last thing you want is a bunch of random people with and without mics joining you in extremely difficult circumstances where vast amounts of coordination and teamwork are required. The idea is that you meet the people you will raid with during the other coop play, and you form friendships with these people and eventually raid together. Matchmaking (or "pugging" as it's known) ruins any and all hope of a successful raid under all but the easiest circumstances.

                • You say don't start off with a huge clan...then say you are being denied...you are on a forum a couple clicks away from the clan forum. It is over a month's time till destiny releases. It's not like you have to amass 100 friends. Nor are you being given insufficient time to find 4 people who are interested in raids or want to be in a clan. Learn to network. Nerf players Bungie. Complaints OP.

                • And if you've ever played an ammo style game (a game with end game raids) your running those with clan members with dedicated chat server and extensive coordination.,.. So for example they can't regulate or require headphones so if there was random matchmaking you could get a group without communication.. Which would mean fail fail fail. This way you will know who you are going with and that you will have communication capabilities which will be vital if this is anything like they have suggested. Clans are also a thing and they are using this to encourage building that social group. And lastly... Your reply don't want to get stuck pug style with a screaming cursing kid for a five hour teamwork essential bout

                • I think maybe your out of touch...... You should look back bungie has always had hard achievements/ missions for you even durning halo. If you wanted recon you had to work for it back in the day, ODST was awesome and still no matchmaking ( kinda hard ), if you followed them for a long time their games can be hard if you didnt play them on easy or normal like a child would, Bungie is a bunch of hardcore guys and gals and the only thing they put matchmaking in is the PVP aspect nothing else. Make a team or shut up thats it, theres no point in getting mad over something you cant do. I plan on trying to do the raids by myself no matter what anyone says because I want to make myself a better player not cry to them and make it easier.

                    • Seeing as my entire...and I mean literally me ENTIRE PSN friends list is made up of people I've met over the years in different games I befriended through random match making...I don't see an issue with this at all. And as has been said I'm sure by numerous people, you'll still most likely be able to invite friends into your raid party regardless. You're just complaining for the sake of complaining. Go make some friends and shut the hell up.

What's better? Six strangers who might cooperate well, or six friends who connect right off the bat

                        • Hopefully if you don't have a clan, you meet people on your journey and become friends to do raids, raids are gonna be a long ways off, not gonna happen the first day of launch, going to have time working to it. I think it's a good idea. If you already have people then cool, if not, make friends out in the wild.

                        • It's just for the very end final endgame. If you burn through all the other endgame content and want to do a raid, get involved with other players. Smith specifically referred to it as a social challenge. Don't do it if you don't want to complete a game that has an element of social challenge. Finally, not every aspect of the game will appeal to everyone. I am super stoked for Destiny, but I'll never even touch the PvP. That means a huge percentage of this game is uninteresting to me, but I don't appeal to the developers to ignore that portion of the game for even more co-op content because I know that many other gamers do, and Destiny is for them too.

Ha ha, imagine if cod did this. U cant find a game unless u have a full team of six people from your friends list to play a match. All Multi player games depend on random match making. That's how most people find additions tho their list. But I can work around this because I'm not antisocial and will find a clan or good players through strikes :) Only thing this can do, is exclude casual players who pay just as much as the rest of the community from playing them based on less experience and elitists not giving them a chance.

                              • You don't need a huge clan. You need six people. That's really not a big deal when you have a forum like this. Just look at all the groups there are to join. Is it ideal? No, probably not? Is it game breaking or as big of a deal as your making it out to be? No, probably not.

                                • Wouldn't be cool if Bungie had a away of meeting random players. Maybe a tower or an open world. Oh how about a 3 man strike team where you can see how well you could work together with them. Ah that would be so awesome. Maybe Bungie will fig out a way. I guess we will just have to ask them to just put random people together. With zero chance of ever getting to the end. Dam them dam them all to hell.
