I always have to push the touch pad to display the on-screen waypoint markers during a mission. By default, the radar always shows an arrow pointing towards my objective, but I find the additional waypoint markers very helpful.
ALSO:
Distance to the waypoint should also be on display next to the marker, exactly how it displays when you push the touch pad in explore mode to indicate the nearest missions. Knowing the distance to the waypoint makes everything much more intuitive. Just my opinion.
I would at least like to see a toggle for these options
I very much agree. Having to click the middle button every 30 seconds gets old.

Why do you need to click it every 30 seconds? It's meant to give you a hint of where to go next, not completely hold your hand.

He means that the waypoint marker will be toggled on for a limited time when you click the touch pad. But then you have to click it again when it disappears. It's hard to know exactly where you're supposed to go without the waypoint. It's not handholding, it's basic logistics.

+1 on toggle mode.

You can't be serious.

Very serious. As much as like exploring, I'm not always looking to do so and would like to have the option to speed up my travels by leaving a way point on the screen. It's a great feature in Skyrim and something I'd love to see in Destiny.

Meant to reply to the guy saying this is bad idea lol
