This is weird to think about

Next year I'll be graduating from high school, and then moving onto university. It's weird to think that what I major in, in university is the main area of work that I'll be doing for probably the rest of my life. So I have to choose wisely. I can't be the only person to have ever thought this, right? (But anyways, if you are in university, what are you majoring in, or if you are planning on going to university, what do you plan on majoring in?)

I didn't find it too weird, I want to do Psychology and Mental Health related stuff so doing it at University is just to be expected. If in 30 years time I decide I want to work with animals because I'm sick of people, I can just go and work with animals :D Like isn't too concrete, a degree in one subject doesn't mean you are stuck in that field of work for life. My dad was saying about the people in his office (IT/Project Management) They had the following degrees. -Zoology -Psychology -No Degree and -English So yeah, life is more malleable than it appears.

  • I'm graduating from college in a year. This is my third term working as a coop studying electrical engineering. You'll get the same feeling about graduating from college. You'll start thinking about the job you're about to apply for and how it could very well be the job you could have for the rest of your life. Don't worry. You'll do fine.

  • I'm on my second semester right now, majoring in math and science (I'm thinking premedical). I'm not exactly sure what system you Brits have (Ahm frum 'Murica!), but it's great to be able to spend a few years learning skills in a broad region (such as Physics, Chemistry, and Biology) and then be able to choose a graduate degree after you know what you are good at. Alas, such benefits only come when you are taking more than 4 years of college :/

  • I personally went with civil engineering. Oddly I chose this career path because it reminds me of the many times I used to rebuild my Lego city (after the Bionicles would come through dimensional gates and fight it out like Micheal Bay's transformers). Now my major isn't exactly like that or exactly like SimCity, but it is close to it. I'll be designing road ways, designing repairs, and so on. In short, go for something that seems interesting (except art majors, those don't open many doors, and you can always practice at home...).

    • The one thing I hated most about High School was that they pounded it into your head that if you don't attend college you will never get anywhere in life. The counselors routinely held student Assembly's where all they did was tell us what would happen if we didn't go to a good school or major university, things like minimum wage jobs for the rest of your life, low income, things like that. Then after I got my GED I found out that the school only wants you to go to a major university because it makes them looks good. What a bunch pricks.

    • Just started my third year of primary education at uni. It's weird to think that in just over two years I'll (hopefully) be in my own classroom teaching.

    • My original plan was: go to uni, get a degree, get a job in the field. Toward the end of my undergraduate degree, a staff member suggested I take an honours year, so then my plan was: do honours, get a job in the field. When I finished my honours degree, I had such a high mark that it was strongly suggested (to put it lightly) that I continue to postgraduate studies. So now my current plan is: finish PhD, get a job either in the field, or as a lecturer, or researcher. tl;dr I didn't expect to be where I am now and have so much career opportunity when I started tertiary ed.

I'm a sophomore right now at my university (Go Cyclones) majoring in Computer Science. Remember this though: your experience will shape who you are and may lead you to unexpected places. Certainly take your decision on your major seriously, but don't be afraid to change it if you find a different calling. Personally, I really enjoy my original choice of major, but that puts me in a pretty small minority. Most people change at least once. Also, don't kill yourself with credits. The university will push you to graduate in 4 years, but it might be worth taking an extra semester or two if you need it. I'm already starting to plan for at least one.

      • I graduate in 4 months, I am stressing because I still haven't picked out a college. Senior year has been a blast, but it has also been super stressful.

      • Actually the majority of people who go to college won't get a job in what they major in, in college. So don't look at it like that.

        • Do something STEM, it gives you a lot of flexibility once you enter the job market. I wouldn't recommend going solely into one field though (i.e. math, physics, etc.)

                • Already in college and already have my major planned. Don't intend to change it all, like most people assume people do. Just find something that aligns with your interest and hobbies and something that will make you happy. If your happy with your job, the money won't matter. Don't focus on the money.
