The Marathon symbol represented the Marathon itself, which is a colony ship mined out from Mars' moon Deimos. So the moon (circle) + hollowed out (inner circle) = the Marathon. Hope that helped!

I didn't know it had meaning beyond the ship's logo. That makes sense though.
