Thieves have stolen a truck in Mexico carrying a dangerous radioactive material used in medical treatments, the UN atomic watchdog has said.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is based in Vienna, said it had been informed by Mexican authorities that the truck, which was transporting cobalt-60 from a hospital in the northern city of Tijuana to a radioactive waste storage centre, was stolen in Tepojaco near Mexico City on Monday.
"At the time the truck was stolen, the [radioactive] source was properly shielded. However, the source could be extremely dangerous to a person if removed from the shielding, or if it was damaged," the IAEA said on Wednesday.
The IAEA has offered to assist Mexican officials, who are searching for the material and have alerted the public.
With a country thats run by drug lords. Its no surprise
A missing shipment of radioactive cobalt-60 was found Wednesday near where the stolen truck transporting the material was abandoned in central Mexico, the country's nuclear safety director said. Commission physicist Mardonio Jimenez said it was the first time cobalt-60 had been stolen and extracted from its container. The only threat was to whoever opened the box and later discarded the pellets of high-intensity radioactive material that was being transported to a waste site. It had been used in medical equipment for radiation therapy. "The person or people who this took out are in very great risk of dying," Jimenez said, adding that the normal survival rate would be between one and three days.
They found it... Now,the cops just have to look out for some glowing car thieves. I wonder if they'll get idiot superpowers now.

1 ReplyThey've already found it, so no need to worry. It sure is fun to watch everyone become an expert on Dr. Strangelove's bomb and RDD's overnight though. Apparently a physicist from the NRC said these guys would be dead within a few days. Using this information and a shit ton of guesses/reasonable estimates, I estimate (much approximate very guess wow such don't quote me) there is at least a fifth of a gram of pure Co-60 in the sample. Suffice it to say, they would not have been able to build a cobalt bomb (besides the low amount, you guys do realize that the cobalt is only added to an already functioning fission weapon in that bomb, right?). Besides, if you were going to do that you wouldn't use Co-60, you'd use normal cobalt (Co-59) and wait for neutron activation via the fission products of Uranium/Plutonium in your main bomb to turn it into Co-60. Co-59's way more plentiful, and you don't have to worry about your supply decaying to nothing in about 50 years.

Silly Mexicans
-
Well I live in New Mexico. That may be in range of whatever missile mexican cartels can put together.
-
OMG! Something bad happened in Mexico? I can't believe what this world is coming too... Tesk-tesk.
-
I wonder what this is going to end up being.
-
Personally took this as a random vehicle theft. Probably is unless anything from the canister is missing but I can't be sure of anything since I felt like I was viewing conflicting information earlier from a few media outlets. Or I'm getting rusty.
-
1 Replylol cobalt bomb? You are giving the Cartels way to much credit. No way in hell they will be able to construct an entirely theoretical device. Dirty bomb maybe, but definitely no cobalt fission bomb.
-
2 RepliesCan't this stuff be used to make a bomb? If this isn't a good example of why we need better border security in the south, I don't know what is.
-
2 Replies>implying cartels could make a cobalt bomb >implying they would figure out how to work it >implying they wouldn't get stopped >implying they would use the bomb >implying they wouldn't get their shit -blam!-ed up
-
Mexico
Oh, sorry guys, that was probably me...
-
I don't know what scares me more, having some Mexican cartels with the capabilities to build dirty bombs, or the potential of the cartel group selling some of the cobalt-60 material to one of the Islamic extremist organizations they have ties with.
-
I guess it could sell on the medical black market.

-
holy shit. this probably won't end well.
-
With an endless amount of possibilities with this, 10$ says they trip and it falls in the dirt.
-
What the fuck?
-
13 RepliesShit, they could build a dirty bomb with that stuff.
-
2 RepliesLol Mexico. So kids, do you like where your crack comes from now?
-
Them crazy Mex.
-
I don't think you've seen how these guys hack apart their rivals, and those images are quite haunting. They're just going to kill at a much more efficient rate with radiation poisoning.
-
1 ReplyIrradiated crack
-
1 ReplySlight scaremongering with the link at the bottom. The cartels don't have nuclear weapons.
-
5 RepliesLols, so all the Mexican drug runners are going to try to start making blue meth by putting cobalt in it?
-
Oh dear. They could put it in our water supply and eat us all. Radiation poisoning for the win.

Seeing stuff like this makes me want to build a nuclear reactor out of smoke detectors.
