How did the Covenant appear more fanatical to the Master Chief?

He can understand their languages, so presumably was getting more zealous rhetoric thrown at him, on top of their using inferior technology+more rush/no retreat tactics. Not much, but its what we got.

Well the elites had clearly forgotten how to fight (last time chief fought them was Halo 2 and that was brutal), the only possible cause must be a greater devotion to religion and less devotion to being good soldiers. It makes perfect sense.
