The theory to create a functionally FTL drive is there. The issue is energy, they'd need a theoretical element to do it. The might find another way or they might reach a point where scientists can manufacture the element themselves.

No, it isn't. You can't conventionally accelerate to speeds faster than light.

I said functionally. I didn't say it actually went faster. It warps time within the area of the ship so it will actually travel faster than light to the outside viewer. I'm well aware of the theory of relativity.

Yep, doesn't mean it isn't expensive. They haven't finished the most important parts of the engine yet....

They've theorized FTL drives, but none are currently physically possible. At this moment due to our understanding of physics, it is impossible to go FTL since it would require infinite energy. The only other way would be to warp space time. What this impulse drive is, is basically a more complicated and high tech solid state rocket engine.

The next stage after that doesn't exist because it's fictional. Nuclear fusion engines are nowhere near unfeasible. Nuclear fusion power stations are because getting out more energy than you put in is impossible (so far...). This is very doable. There are teething problems and it needs a lot of funding. Sending men to Mars will be a doddle.
