I'm not American, but I can honestly say If there were a similarly practiced pledge here I wouldn't do it. I find nationalism and patriotism deeply problematic constructs.

Agreed. I see no reason at all to say a pledge to my country. Some Americans are probably just brought up to think that it's their duty to respect the... chunk of land, territory, whatever you wanna call it?
