Heresy Act 1 Ending Thoughts
EDIT: It seems I was mistaken about the specific moment in time. It is the memory of Oryx after he claimed the Taken power, not after he made the Dreadnaught. -------------------------------------------------------------- It was always a matter of when given his prominence in the trailer and the promotional art for the Episode, but the Echo of Navigation is now in the story proper. What surprised me was when the memory is from. This isn't the memory of the Oryx we killed; it is Oryx from the timeframe of the Books of Sorrow after he killed Akka and claimed the Taken power. So, we see both Xivu Arath and Savathun meet this version of him, and even tell him that we are the ones who killed him. This version of Oryx is...remarkably accepting of that to a worrying extent, wanting us to present ourselves to him and become his successor on the spot. He is very devoted to his beliefs in the Sword Logic, and it shows - we killed him, it is proof that he didn't deserve to exist, and he wants to pass the mantle of Taken King onto us. So much so that he called Xivu Arath a heretic for protesting his acceptance of his death, even challenging her to destroy him herself, asking whether she's afraid she'll fail or succeed. That was some of the dialogue I got from playing through the Nether this week, at least. I've seen Oryx and Xivu interacting, but not Oryx and Savathun. That will be interesting to see. We also got Oryx's thoughts on the Witness. He calls it a charlatan and calls out Xivu Arath for serving it. So, it is safe to say that Oryx and the Witness were not on amicable terms. I've often wondered if Oryx wasn't a follower of the Witness, but instead saw himself as a rival to the latter, and this might be confirmation of that. Now, the Witness has been unmade and its Darkness mixed with Light has given the memory of Oryx a new shape and form. If this Echo makes it past the end of this Episode, that'll be trouble for us.
• It’s super interesting that Oryx calls the Witness a Charlatan, as a ton of us, myself included, assumed that Oryx and Savathune both were the closest to becoming Disciples of the Witness. This completely disregards that fact, and also possets the idea that the siblings didn’t know of the Witnesses existence till after Oryx had died.

    • I know it’s out of Bungie’s hands but the fact Xivu is completely muted in this conversation is criminal. I highly doubt the strike will be resolved and dialogue recorded before the end of the Episode, but we should be given some archive of the completed conversations when they’re able. Or, if everything goes right, replay options for all Heresy missions should be offered.
