Seasons has hurt destiny

I feel like the seasonal model has don't more to hurt the game than build apon jt the reason I say this is because they are actively having to make decisions on to get rid of paid content as well as hurting live events and generally just making certain portions of the game feel more like work than entertainment not to say the seasonal model hasn't introduced good things but I just miss knowing I could go back and play things that I paid for and I'm curious to see how the community feels about this so throw some pros and cons of the seasonal stuff

  • Idk. I love having content every 3 months. But I also loved the annual feeling. Things felt better and less like I have to play now or I’m gonna have FOMO. I don’t know what I’d really 100% prefer tbh…

If it wasn't successful they wouldn't keep doing it. Seasonal model is what most every game does.

          • Nah bro, I love being drip fed meh content at best every 2-4 months. Now excuse me, I'm going to go and do the copy pasted weekly mission for this week, being practically no different than any before it! Maybe I'll play some of the recycled seasonal event that hasn't changed in the last 3 years!

            • Worst part for me is seasonal leveling. Having to reset my level to a point where I need to play low level content to be high enough to play end game content. It's the reason I won't ever play a grandmaster nightfall. By the time my power level is high enough it gets reset.

Seasons are pretty much only good for the most casual of all casual players who get on the game at reset, see something new, and get excited. They fall victim to drip feeding. Anyone who is a remotely dedicated player, a long term player, or even just a casual with some critical thinking ability is able to recognize how difficult to engage with content when it is delivered this way. I consider forsaken to be the best year of destiny 2 so far EASILY, and it isn't even just because of how good forsaken was by itself. Obviously forsaken as a DLC was stellar, giving people plenty to do and holding on to players for a long time, but what I look back on most fondly from year 2 was the seasonal model. It was not like it was now, at all. Not everything was delivered at once but MOST of it was; raids came out on day 1, seasonal activities were fully accessibly from day 1, the only things that were added over the course of the seasons was exotic quests and things like Heroic menagerie and Niobe Labs. I will never ever forget, the time I played the most destiny over a short period of time was the first week of season of opulence. I was on the game all day, grinding runes, doing menagerie runs for loot, and getting in a 6 man stack with friends to do the triumphs in a rush to level up the chalice and get Austringer and Beloved as fast as possible. It was FUN. And it lasted... I was doing menagerie runs to try out the farmable weapons up until literally the day before menagerie was taken out of the game. Same with forges, I was grinding for those weapons from winter of 2019 when it came out to fall of 2020 when it was vaulted. I played the game a lot but I didn't get burnt out, instead I had some of the most fun and engaging time Ive ever had on this game. There is nothing wrong with giving people what they want. Gamers don't want things in moderation, they don't want to be timegated or drip fed, they want things to do and they want to have fun. And if they do it all in a couple weeks and have no reason to play anymore? They can play something else! And they can look back on their time playing destiny, remember how fun it was and how much there was to do, and look forward to the next content drop with confidence that it will deliver the same experience. The problem with what I just said is the "Play something else" part... bungie doesnt want people to leave. Obviously. They live off of player engagement. So they drip feed little by little to keep people playing every week, like the game is some kind of addiction experiment conducted on a mouse that I learned about in Psych 101.

              • A filthy minded executive once told me that the capitalist economy is like selling a 6 as a 9 to buyers and hooking them into a 69 cycle... Destiny is a product and Bungie is the seller. Every product nowadays portray its ethos and company mindset. D1 was all about fun when it launched. People were happy to pay and buy expansions on quarterly basis until it declined. D2 had no ethos in it. Its just built as a product for mass consumption and zero passion in development. Its difficult to explain but try to imagine Elon Musk and Steve Jobs reflecting their passion in their respective product and then picture any Bungie executive doing the same. If your mentality is in synch with Tesla or iPhone passion then you won't mind splashing the cash. If not, you will probably shop elsewhere. Destiny has zero passion visible in the product and passionate people have probably been driven out but the finance department (imagine Musk being booted out of Tesla by shareholder who want more dividends). There is a sales model which appeals to fomo audience and it works because you need less quality and less quantity to make it sustainable (just like mobile games). The current season pass model fits the bill perfectly becuae it allows a forget and forgive strategy to the casual player and newbies while at the same time providing enough spare cash for Bungie to invest in recycled content. We are in the 69 cycle now and this will continue for a long time because the game is the proverbial carrot on the stick and we ate the ones chasing the carrot.

                • Agree, my reasoning is because when seasons started they had nice gear sets, I paid into it. well school happens and i cant continue, ad now when im pack in grinding for...arctic jackets... Am i not outfitted in some type of high tech suit of armor. Point is i missed a lot fo good stuff and i have to hope it comes back in the market.

                    • I agree that seasons was not the best choice for this game. Yes there's new content more often for me to tackle but each "new" thing gets played into oblivion since it's the only one new thing to do. I am not a veteran who complained about content droughts, and prefer the model of annual expansions with holiday events to fill the space between. It enables suspense to build for the next content drop, it allows theories to be more than an analysis of this weeks lore entry, it allows players to catch up and complete content, and maybe the biggest thing for me anyways, is that it lets its players walk away from the game. With constant drip feed content, you never know when something important is added, discovered, whether or not you're missing out on something and nobody wants to miss out on the cool stuff! Taking breaks from Destiny can lead to missing out on the fun and reveals and I don't want to miss those things because I enjoy playing the game. The last thing I think seasons does, is undermine threats and removes urgency from the campaign. We take these massive pauses from universe ending threats to deal with side stories and it really deflates the epicness of some of the villains we fight. Hard to have a good villain when you know their threat is mediocre and will always be resolved within 90 days.

100 %. You are not alone with that opinion. I'd rather have content far less frequently while having ALL the content available at all times. During early year 3, we had all the content (besides factions and trials of the nine) available. That was the best imo. Now everything gets vaulted and god knows if we will ever see anything of it back and if so, they will throw reissues at us to make us regrind everything we already grinded for. I don't feel like thats fun. I rather play stuff when i want to, not when its made available (or made available AGAIN zZzZ). In games like wow, i grind raids from 13 years ago still from time to time. It feels nice to be able to go back, even tho most people don't do it frequently. Makes the game feel worth time spending in. Current D2 doesn't give me that feel anymore whatsoever. Just a checklist every season i "work" through. No fun experiences i will remember like i did in year 1 and year 2.

                    • I always hit the wall where I just get bored with Destiny 2 until the next season. And it sucks since there’s no hidden exotic quest like they do every season which gets everyone to come back for a bit.

                    • But I like taking 11 weeks for a raid I already played in D1 to play out…. Or to dry up $40 DLC content in three weeks and be reduced to logging in to grab a penguin statute and shooting some floaty bots. It’s really compelling, quality content - Sarcasm

                    • Personally, I think it would be nice if they extended the ranking rewards out to 200 or 300 even. I see a ton of people over 100. I'm a solo player and sitting at 188 with max light already with 42 days left in the season and I work full time and just play in the afternoons or when my wife does school work. It's easy to rank up when you just hit the bounties while doing pinnacles. 200 would be pretty cake but maybe they put all the "seasonal" content in the first 100 and put some legacy content or some ornaments, more golf balls and things like that farther down the line. I would play for some old exotic ornaments, prisms and such. The season keeps it somewhat fresh, but running out of seasonal content is a real thing.

                    • How players view success and how Bungie views success aren't the same thing. We look at how much fun the game is. Bungie looks at the cash flow numbers. If they're making the money that they want then they will ignore any complaints. Luke isn't trying to make a good game, he's trying to keep his bosses happy so that he doesn't get fired.

                      • Some people are addicts and like the drip feed. Some people have more self control and supplement their addiction with other opportunities when droughts occur. Either way neither scenario is correct. You just fit in one of the peg holes.

                        • People are saying seasons are better than a content drought, but here in S14 we got both. Outside of GMs there's nothing really I want to do, hate EAZ so Solstice is way off the table. How many times can you do VoG before you're kind of sick of it?
