Ask the retailers being Microsoft or Sony if they plan to sell D1 digital version at any time as part of a sale.
Ps. Make sure you do not buy a hard copy as all D1 codes have long since expired.

Good shout about the hard copy codes. I was considering buying a physical copy at one point. I'll contact Microsoft as well but wouldn't Activision be the one who decides when the product goes on sale?

No. Activision is now out of the picture as Bungie left them awhile back. The Destiny franchise is owned and published solely by Bungie now.
