Seemingly Unpopular Opinion: I think sunsetting will be fine

I'm sure I'll get downvoted to oblivion for this, but I wanted to show my support. We should at least give a few seasons worth of sunsetting before we write off the entire system. I'm cautiously optimistic about it. I'm not saying it'll be perfect, but let's see how it goes. One year is a long time to use a weapon/armour build you like (and you can always replay content where level doesn't matter).

  • Yes it will be. It's going to make destiny fun again. The only way it won't is if Bungie pulls some stupid shit and just re introduces old D1 or old 2 weapons consistently. Then the game will die quickly. They need atleast 20-30 new legendaries a season. Brand new, no bullshit. They want to sunset then they have to deliver.

    • Your stance absolutely mirrors mine. It all hinges on how it is implemented and if done well, the game will be better for it. I totally think we should always assess changes upon their implementation as Bungie obviously already know how we will react to being told things like this.

I'm personally a little uneasy about if I lose my favorite weapons. But, I've played for so long on destiny now, and I really do agree with you. Let's ACTUALLY give it a chance guys. _______________________________________ Instead of wasting time criticizing "Sunsetting" (FYI people. It hasn't even been released yet and you have your opinions) How about waiting... actually waiting for once? _______________________________________ I have my opinion out there. Don't care if it's unpopular. If popular is NEGATIVE CRITICIZING, count me out. I'd rather be reasonable. _______________________________________
*Cue the comments...
EDIT: Fixed wording

      • sunsetting will work if bungie can bring in consistently interesting weapons, they won’t because of current dev team numbers and have planned on reusing weapons to stretch out the grind, it’s a method of drip feeding the player base until the next dlc and if you have been playing D2 since launch sunsetting should scare and concern you about the path they are taking

      • You may get downvoted by folks who can’t see past their own nose, but you earned an upvote from me. I don’t LOVE it, but anybody who looks at it objectively can see it’s good for the game. There’s a reason virtually every live game as service does it.

          • Still don't believe we have a fuk tonne of weapons and only a few are usable. Instead of sunset, buff the Miriad of crap in the vault Perhaps have a 2 weekly rotation where a random weapon is buffed, say bottom of the pile stuff?

          • It's not the concept that we hate, it's the knowledge that Bungie will utilize it to reuse old weapons later on and label it as "new content". We already saw them do it in D1 so we have no reason to expect anything else.

Look in your vault, then imagine deleting everything in there in order to re-get the exact same gear over multiple new seasons. Now tell everyone that sunsetting (as defined by Bungie's own posts which say they will re-introduce old weapons in new seasons) is a good thing. Edit: They exclude exotics for now because it's very very clear that there would be a riot if anyone thought they had to loose their exotics only to re-get them again in a different season. As it stands many players are leaving or on the verge of leaving over sunsetting. Worryingly for Bungie this includes many of their top youtubers. I happen to know many are actively looking for new games to champion.

You shouldn’t be showing support. This is another Non-Support worthy effort on bungies part. Sunsetting is strictly going into place because this lazy developer doesn’t want to manage a large loot pool every season moving forward. This is essentially a reset back to Zero and their track record of shit rewards rehashed activities and continuous bounty grinding proves it . What you should be doing is saying hell no , I won’t buy play or show support for their laziness. The game and the player base deserve better than what’s being brought .

                • Really? Bungie giving the finger to people who put in effort to get their gear is FINE? Do you know how much suffering the Randy's Throwing Knife Quest was? Or Luna's Howl? What about the times where people would fling themselves at the brick wall of RNG just to break through and get the roll they wanted? How can they compensate THAT? By doing the exact same shit we've been doing? Only now there's a time limit? Have I ever told you the definition of insanity?

                  • Its all going to hinge on bungie's ability to consistently generate a large number of compelling weapons pretty much every season. You know, the same people who just a couple of months ago didn't have the resources to make 5 trials guns and ritual weapons in the same season. I'm sure it will all work out.

                  • It’s not one year though. I’ve just deleted all the gear that will be irrelevant in a few days and realised I’m going to have to do the same thing again in three months. It’s one year for everything that comes out next season, it’s far less time for anything from Shadowkeep to this season.

i think if bungie is going ahead with sunsetting. they should add a simple system where if you have two copies of a weapon you can dismantle one at the gunsmith and put the perks on the gun you just dismantled onto another copy of the same weapon. i also think the same should be done with armor where you can dismantle a copy of armor and move a stat onto another copy of the same armor. if they do this i think everyone would be fine with sunsetting i will wait and see how it goes before i decide if i like it or not.

                    • Sunsetting is nothing but the pushing of the reset button on D2. When D2 started all our D1 weapons and armour didn’t transfer over. Now all of our older weapons and armour don’t disappear, they just become obsolete in endgame and NEW content going forward. Instead of being Lvl 0 like you were when D2 launched your Lvl 1060 or whatever the cap is after this upcoming season but in reality you’re starting all over again in the fall. It appears to me that Sunsetting coupled with the nerfs to reload perks is simply the game starting over again. We are weaker guardians like we were when D2 launched. The Space Magic and Power Fantasy are the two attributes that made playing Destiny unique when compared to other games and both were neutered when D2 launched. Both are taking a hit based on Sunsetting which has me concerned that the game will mirror what we experienced in D2Y1. We all witnessed a mass player exodus shortly after launch and it wouldn’t surprise me if this occurred this September as well. History has a way of repeating itself if you don’t learn from previous mistakes. I’m gonna be hanging out in the weeds come release with my wallet securely glued to my right hip. Once independent reviews are out and if the DLC doesn’t blow everyone away with genre defining gameplay I’ll be playing something else and will say c’ya to this franchise. What will also be interesting. We will see if the F2P crowd are enamoured enough to actually fork out money and are invested enough to continue come September?

Not if Bungie can't produce enough new gear to keep up with everything they're Sunsetting. That's why it will fail, miserably. You really think the guys that had to choose between creating Trials gear, and creating new Ritual weapons, can pull that off? They're about to retire 200+ weapons, which includes all the Year 1 weapons that never got a chance to be upgraded to Year 3, and knowing their track record with the last few seasons, we'll be lucky to even get 20 new weapons to play with. That's why they can take this Sunsetting idea, and shove it.

It's a much bigger question than "will sunsetting be fine". Sunsetting is going to retire 3000+ pieces of gear and single-handedly destroy the main purpose of playing Forges, Reckonings, Dungeons, Menageries and many other activities. Unless Bungie is going to miraculously produce enough brand new, worthwhile gear to patch this hole, the only way to feasibly make it work is by having us grind (and invest resources) for gear we've already found before or just leaving the activities to rot. And don't forget that Destiny's famously horrible RNG works against sunsetting when it can take months for the game to drop the perk roll you want. Sunsetting just makes you feel bad grinding for loot... in a looter game. THAT is why players are against sunsetting, rightfully so.
