Food for thought

Have you ever looked at old OffTopic rp threads? They’re a much different breed than what we have today. -different format. I don’t even know how to describe it. -power scaling is WAYYYY lower than what we have today. Great googly moogly we’re OP in comparison. -the amount of dead rp worlds is crazy. Camelot is one I found and liked, and it’s dead-dead like another Star Wars one. All in all though, I’d say I like ours the most. We’re bigger, quicker and imo flow more naturally than them. But what do y’all think?

  •
It was a simpler time, a better time, I must be honest. Everyone now-a-days is obsessed with having an Army and having a powerful unique character. Back then, you were in-charge of your character's actions and only your character's actions. If you managed to adopt a following of other Offtopic Users, very well: That was your army. The strongest characters could reliably best the weaker characters, but even the two weakest characters of any world were likely to overpower the strongest single fighter. There was a story behind everything your character had; You were lucky to be permitted to start with a sentimental talisman and a blaster rifle. Anything other than that was purely cosmetic. Nobody even had their own personal space-craft, they had to find some other way from planet to planet. But most importantly, people were willing to die. Do you want to know why the current RP worlds die off so quickly? It's because people get bored and don't bother continuing them. The easiest way to avoid this is for people to naturally take necessary breaks to stay invested in an evolving world, and character death was just that. Your character gets killed, and it permanently affects your killer, your companions, and in some cases the greater story of the world. You take a break for a few days, maybe up to a few weeks, and then come back with an all-new character, nice and relaxed. And I have no idea what you mean by "flow more naturally", having an RP be "quicker" is an indicator of lacking substance, and I'll be blunt: The RPs from a half a decade ago were much "bigger" and longer lasting than anything in the past 12 months.
^Wyoming

    • I like our chaotic setting and how things feel more personal, but I wouldn't mind lowering the power level (and number of armies) a bit.

      • That reminds me, if you need another person to DM a boss like Dislay did, I wouldn’t mind giving one of my villains a test run! Anyway, power creep is a thing, and it’s a big reason I stayed out of the RP scene for so long. I don’t like making uber powerful characters, but it feels like I have to to keep up. Like, Mirabelle is my idea of a powerful character, and you’ve seen how underpowered she is compared to the group around her. Makes me worried to try out Beldam (my other RP character), because he’s probably a lot weaker. : /

        • The power scaling is what I liked the best back in the day. I’ve tried bringing it back but to no avail.

The only old one I remember is the Dojo which had like 2000 or 3000 posts on it. Maybe even higher. As soon as a thread reaches a certain age it can no longer be bumped though so every rp thread is doomed to fall into obscurity once it reaches that age
