From my first ever xcom 2 play through:
I was bad at xcom at this time, I didn't have a stable income of supplies and resources, and I didn't have any weapon or armour upgrades except the tier 2 sword.
The ship gets shot down by ADVENT, cue the 'save the ship' mission, I send my most capable soldiers to fight. We destroy the jammer but at a huge cost, many soldiers perished, eventually all my frontline soldiers fall as we try to extract.
One sniper witnessed it all, Zoe Robinson, she was the only one to make it out alive that day, she was sniping from the fortifications at the ramp. She is now a permanent character in my character pool, scarred and hiding in the shadows swearing revenge for those who died.

I remember my turn at that mission. I sent all the rookies they sent out to soak up shots at the outer shell of my defenses while my hardened veterans took the hammers out and my one sniper stayed back. Lost 2 veterans and it ended up being a watch all the rookies die as they tried to run away. While my SAS gas mask team tried to cover them mowing down enemies but not enough

I was playing with the Long War 2 mod active, and when the Avenger got shot down all of my best troops were away on missions. No matter how good you are, and how much you reload your saves, a pack of seven rookies and three injured sergeants just can't fend off the alien horde. The campaign was in bad shape anyway, so I just started a new one.
