I don't think we'll ever find out why Marty left (probably due to non-disclosure agreements etc.) but that event (the way he was just abruptly sacked and his legal battle afterwards) seriously dented my love and respect towards Bungie as a result and I've never felt the same way about the company since which is kind of sad. What made it worse was that no one at Bungie (people he worked with for years) came out to defend him (although I realise they were probably prohibited from doing so).

Well I guess we can’t really know the full story of what happened behind studio doors. But it definitely made me very happy when he won the case against Bungie. He got everything he asked for too... brilliant. I hate all that corporate shite it really shows how shallow people can be. After all the years he worked for them through Halo, with his EPIC masterpiece soundtrack that did wonders for the studio. Then D1 soundtrack on top of that. And they spit in his face?! Bungie bosses should be ashamed of themselves. Bungies gone from god tier to laughing stock and it all started with this O’Donnel/Staten fiasco.

  • Same, over a decade of blind and unadulterated love just fizzled when I read Marty was fired.

Marty never left. He was fired because of some tweet that was "slandering" Activi$ion when he was expressing his disappointment in Activi$ion's changes to the Music of the Spheres. Hell, he was even being sued by Bungie at one point. Marty obviously won, and I'm glad for him. It's honestly bullshit that he was fired. He worked for them for 10+ years, Bungie could have cut him some slack, and the tweet wasn't even blatantly slandering Activi$ion.

  • Don't start this crap, it's not what happened. The battle to keep the studio's integrity had been going for a long time before it all imploded. Marty was another casualty, all employees who wanted to preserve the art, the direction and the meaning of the game had already left or had been showed the door. What happened at E3 was the culmination of months of frustration. And now we have D2 in all its splendor.

It's exactly how it happened. Martin O'Donnell was "terminated without cause", Bungie refused to pay him his cut, and he was still forced to compose music for them until a certain point in time before the game's release. A lot of this may have been a feud, but all families have feuds.

  • I know, I know, I was in way too deep when the whole thing blew up. Just could not believe they fired the soul of their game. Without taking sides, one could tell that day marked the beginning of a rapid decline. ;[ Still play occasional Halo and D1, listen to Marty's music on a regular basis :)
