Here is the real reason why, from Luke Smith himself.
Personally, I think of Destiny 1 as sort of an issue zero in a comic book series. It’s about introducing the universe and some characters in it and some statements, but I think we want to—and a bunch of those statements were questions. I don’t know that we’ll answer all of those statements from the first game, and aren’t going to attempt to in Destiny 2 either.
That is why Lord Saladin doesn't recognize us.
This has zero relevance given the context of both your quote and OPs statement.
Yes that was the point. Bungie through multiple events, at multiple times, with multiple people have stated over, and over again that D2 will have reflections of D1. However D1 is done and done and any events that transpired in D1 stay in D1, just as what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. From Activation's CEO saying that D2 will be a hard reset, all the way down to Deej saying that there will only subtle nods to veterans. Our triumphs started at the title screen and ended at Shaxx's various quotes during homecoming. Basically all accounts of acknowledgements to veteran players actions of D1 were erased with a clean slate. Just like guardians of deep lore our actions are just another tale from long, long ago. As far as Saladin is concerned we are brand new guardians to him.

Respectfully, I'm not sure I buy it. I mean, Shaxx calls your Guardian, "Saladin's Young Wolf" less than five minutes into Destiny 2. Bungie didn't have to do that at all--especially when they already did those D1 Triumphs as you load up the game. As far as I saw, there is no clean slate, really. The Exo Stranger is even mentioned in a couple of separate Ghost scans (as is SIVA), so while D1's impact is minimal, sure, it is indeed still lingering in your Guardian's recent history. I humbly believe that Saladin not mentioning our RoI exploits is either an oversight, or simply just that unimportant. Perhaps we'll get more context and confirmation as new content rolls in.

To me, it seems all those mentions are just fan service, nothing more. It seems clear to me that Destiny 1 is being left behind, both gameplay and established lore.
