So stop taking their money and giving it to people who work zero hours a week
You are paid in the value that you bring to your employer. And that private property shall not be subject to coercion.

      • When I think of poverty in America as a kid, I used to think it was like 3rd world countries. They have to drink bad water, hard to get any type of food, live in a shack they call home, and walk around barefoot. Now, as I got older and see what it is actually like my empathy levels dropped. Entertainment is not a right. A car is not a right. Think about why you are at where you are and figure a way to get out of it instead of blaming other people for your misfortune.

        • Taxation isn't what is keeping people below the poverty line. Insufficient wages are. Realistically, what do you get taxed a year? Keep in mind, that that is total tax. Not all of it goes to the unemployed. A lot of it directly benefits you. You know the road you drive on to get to work: paid for by taxes. Don't drive, but use the transit system: taxes. Walk or bicycle? Taxes keep police employed to keep the streets safe. You probably pay at most $200 a year to keep stuff like welfare, disability, etc. going. Honestly, is that $200 really the difference between you and the poverty line? I doubt it.

          • Yes let's have no welfare at all and just let people be homeless. You right wing nut jobs are -blam!-ing crazy P.S. I'm not supporting people who don't actively seek work and just stay on welfare. But how many people do that realistically?

          • IMO living on welfare and/or poverty is a choice. If one doesn't like ones current situation, then one must find the motivation to get out of it.

          • That's averaging less than 6 hours a day. You better be getting paid well if you're only working that much. Maybe if you have yourself and a partner doing that, but if you're working alone, and especially if you're raising a family, that's not enough time.

            • I understand the need for social programs and even social safety nets to help keep folks afloat - but it sickens me to see so many view these programs as a means to get by without ever looking to improve their circumstance. An able working body may find themselves requiring aid, and this is fine. We pay our taxes to a nation which is in a position to offer these things, or at least many of us do. Publicly funded programs which benefit the public should not be taken for granted or abused. Wait times at clinics go up as folks needlessly wander in for things they could remedy themselves. Welfare rates fall below poverty lines as the system is stretched past capacity. Taxes go up as our dollar falls in value. The anti-welfare state of mind is understandable, but is more a symptom than a diagnosis of the problem. So many see these systems as their priveledge to use without ever considering the definition of "priveledge". Whole families who, for generations, abuse social assistance. We don't need to delete these programs, we need major reform and an audit. Everyday I see these people who live on handouts and with each passing day feel more and more spiteful towards how they leach off of the money which the rest of us pay to keep our nation funded. I don't wish to see my taxes reduced - I wish to see them spent where they are needed. I am sorry if your situation is difficult and I can sympathise with those who need a helping hand - I've been there. Been jobless, been homeless, been in a state where I was virtually unemployable. It doesn't have to stay that way. Here in the "civilized" world, there are options and means of pulling yourself up by the bloody boot straps. Some people can't, and that is why we have certain systems in place...but others don't seem to understand the difference between "can't" and "won't". Reform. Don't abolish.

            •
So stop taking their money and giving it to people who work zero hours a week
I don't know about you but I was raised to help those in need But so many people take advantage of these hand outs. If you're on food stamps you shouldn't be buying Mountain Dew, Doritos, steak, 5 pounds of several different cheeses, overall they SHOULDN'T be spending $300 a week at the market. That is where I draw the line. Why should someone working 40 hours or more a week get to only spend $50-$90 on groceries for a week for a family of 4, but this person who stubbed their toe gets $300 a week? And then uses other cash they come across to get McDonald's every day. What? This shit happens all over my town. You have people on food stamps and disability driving mercedes around town and going on vacation whenever they wish. Then you have actual people who need it, and because of those people above they aren't getting what they need. They are also being judged by the public. They're driving a car from 2004 that has millions of issues with it. They live in a bad neighborhood. They need assistance. and I will not hesitate to help them out. But these pricks taking advantage of the hand out, need to go fųck themselves.

If you were poor you wouldn't be able to pay for the luxury of a smartphone, or internet. You'd have to only focus on rent, electric, water bills, and food. Actually, if you were truly poor you'd probably have your housing subsidized and only pay for electric, if that, and food, unless you also qualified for food stamps. I work a decent amount, and I barely have much extra to save/spend, but I also have electricity, water, satellite, internet, phones, a car, health insurance, life insurance, and a house. Just because I don't have a lot of extra money after bills doesn't mean I'm poor by any means.

                    • I disagree. It doesnt matter how much you work if you blow all your money on smokes, booze, drugs, gambling, iphones and sportscars... and then say have kids on top of all that? Everybody wants to make more but the only people i know that work fulltime and complain about having trouble getting by waste most of there money and try to live out of there means. One idiot i know in particular complains they cant get good food for there kids so feeds them ramen all the time while having a 600$ phone, full cable with hbo, a new camero and regulary spending hundreds a month on booze and weed..

                      • You do realise that removing welfare wouldn't necessarily lower people's taxes. The tax would still be taken, it would just go towards extra spending on the military or something. So it wouldn't make a lick of difference to the taxpayer.

                              • I get taxed, people on welfare buy booze, money goes back into the economy. I'm fine with it. Sometimes I think people forget what being poor is actually like. In today's world a car and a phone is pretty much a necessity - I don't chastise people who own them as scroungers. I can't speak for America, but over here it's blown up into a massive issue and people get tricked into believing those on welfare are living the life of f*cking Riley, when that just isn't the case.
