https://youtu.be/OHwosuNAHWI This video details what is currently known about the disappearance of the Dwemer. It's quite long but it's really a great video. Basically, the Dwemer found the heart of Lorkhan and planned using it to power their giant machine "The Brass Tower" and use it to gain immortality. Basically they disappeared because with the tools Keening, Sunder, and Wraithguard they poked the heart and then suddenly disappeared. My theory is that the reason why the Dwemer Automatons have lasted so long is because the souls of the Dwemer are now occupying them (basically they got immortality by becoming machines)

  • The machines are powered by soul gems. That's how they have infinite energy

  • I'd like to think that but first off, soul gems don't last forever. We see this by the depleting of energy in our enchanted weapons. So in that context why not add my theory to your statement. The souls of the Dwemer inhabit the machines they created and their souls are kept within the soul gems of these machines

  • But the Dwemer put the soul gems in the machines when they made them. What your saying is that the soul gems were all empty then they all ironically got filled with Dwarven souls. Sounds unlikely.

  • Tru but in the context of this, it's not like you need your enchanted weapon to be completely empty before recharging it with say a grand soul gem. The Dwemer's souls could very well have just override the soul in there already. Then again the flaw with that is that you need another soul gem to refill, not just the soul itself. Perhaps with the heart of Lorkhan, the heart itself acted as the vestige holding the soul and carrying it into the enchantment, or, even though this would be a revision of my last reply, perhaps the souls aren't even in the soul gems and they just prolonged the charge of the existing soul gems and thus occupied them the machines in another way

I'm pretty sure the gems in the dwarven machines do last forever though. Or at least work in a different way from weapon enchantments. That's why I have a problem with your that theory. I'm going to look through my books then edit this post if I find anything. EDIT: yeah, they used advanced magic/technology so the soul gems work as a power source that lasts a really long time. Some of the automations are "dead" from their power running out, but for the most part the souls sustain them for thousands of years and will continue to.

  • Oh that's pretty cool man. Thanks for that. I guess they're just chilling in a different plane of existence like Arniel or whatever his name is
