Destiny was an excellent game. I bought it on DVD about 6 months ago and I haven't played anything else since. I certainly got my money's worth, and I don't regret the purchase.
However, I don't think I'll be playing Destiny again.
Last night I logged in to discover my favorite part of the game (PvP Control) has been moved behind the paywall in a forced upgrade to TTK.
Every developer has the right to charge for upgrades and content updates, but it is not OK to remove features from an existing product that customers have already paid for.
What Bungie has done feels a lot like theft and extortion. I'm not interested in any new features or content, so from my perspective, TTK is just ransomware.
Needless to say, I haven't purchased it.
And now that I know Bungie might arbitrarily remove entire play modes from a product after I purchase it from them, I don't think I will buy another one of their titles in the future.

TTK made it a hundred times better lol.

19 RepliesIt has been a few days since my original post, so I thought I'd check in and see if it is still here. I have to admit I'm surprised (and impressed) Bungie hasn't yet gassed and buried this thread. A lot of people seem to agree with me, which is great to see, and thanks for adding your support. A lot of people disagree with me, and that's OK too. The vast majority of people disagree with my position, obviously, because millions of people are buying the upgrade. That said, judging from some of the replies from those who disagree with my original post, it seems there are some who still don't understand my position, so I will illustrate with an example: Suppose a guy sells you an amplifier and two speakers for your home entertainment system. He's a wealthy guy and a generous guy, so he sells the equipment for only $2. It's excellent, high-quality gear, and so you get an amazing bargain. A year later he comes to your house while you're at work, takes one of the two speakers, and leaves a note. If you pay him another $1 then he'll give back the second speaker AND he'll paint some very cool flames on the sides AND he'll add some very cool new features to your amp. Your entertainment system still works with one speaker, so you don't have to pay him. Then again, it's only $1... and that's no big deal, because even at a total of $3 you are still getting great value for your money. But that's not the point, is it? The point is this: Are you going to pay the guy or are you going to stand on principle? It makes no difference if he wants $1 or $10 or $100 or $1000, because if you are standing on principle then the exact dollar amount doesn't matter. Pay the guy if you want to; I'm not criticizing your decision, but I am criticizing his ethics. And I think you should probably call that payment what it is. I have three final comments: 1. This thread does belong in this forum (Bugs). I have been developing software for over 20 years. I know the technology and I know the business. When you upgrade a product and your upgrade breaks something that wasn't broken before, it's called a bug. PvP Control is broken now and it wasn't broken before. 2. It is conservatively estimated that Bungie has earned over $550 million on Destiny, and it's estimated that Bungie has about 500 employees. On average, that's over a million dollars per employee. Think about that before you open your wallet to pay for the next forced upgrade. 3. Bungie doesn't need your money, but it's a smart company with a smart business strategy, and so far that strategy has paid huge dividends. The company knows a small minority, like me, will object to their revenue model, but it's not enough to make a difference. I have no delusions about that.
TTK is just ransomware.
Bump.

35 RepliesIf you have not got ttk how can you say it ruined it when in reality it's the destiny everyone has been waiting for, stop expecting free DLC also of it was free they would loose money and as a result would not be able to fund the game for more content or even take servers down

You must not remember the halo days with swat in halo

13 RepliesI like the post and also feel there is project board somewhere like this. Thank you for participating in the "destiny 10yr market test project" 1: Sell as little of original game as possible (check) 2: Sell held back content as dlc (check) 3: Sell new dlc at cost of a complete game (check) 3a: Sell dance move emotes at silly price to test "microtransitions" (they fell for it and check) 4: Restrict non ttk players access to enforce sale (BIG check) 5: Quietly restrict account access on certain consoles, enforcing multiple purchases for one family (check & high five to legal team) 6: Ignore posts with credible questions, hope apathy kicks in, continue with new improved "Highwayman" business model . Weekend break at the corporate lodge for best idea of the month. The term "Ransomware" is looking good

Well said Bugies Bullying tactics won't work on me
-
I bought it because I couldn't help myself but I completely agree
-
2 RepliesRead the agreement you agreed to it. So it's your own fault. They already said the game will keep changing its a online multiplayer game.

Not a bug

I feel your pain 😢 I was of the same opinion as you and then made the mistake of watching my mate play TTK and it seems inevitable that I'm going to buy it on pay day
-
9 RepliesI would be delighted to know how $40 USD converts to $80 CAD.

"Destiny....become mediocre!" "Destiny, because 50 mil a year just isn't enough!"
-
3 RepliesI have buy the new ttk content and it sucks...all the new way to upgrade and level is like " hey -blam!- u start from beginning with nothing". All what you have been and done before is worthless.. Broken level system! Im a veteran gamer with thousands of hours, but no more....
-
Bump in the highest. If they've done it before they'll do it again. I paid for TOO in HOW and now it will return as a selling point for future DLC. And it will be another weak ass attempt like HOW and TDB
-
You are in the 20%.
-
ransomware..... should be a new category for xbox and PS stores.... just one developer in it of course but at least the games would be flagged to give customers a heads up...
-
I can understand where your coming from. However, if you like destiny that much I suggest buying taken King. It's better in every way imaginable. Bunnies biggest mistake was not making this a subscription based game from the get go. If you average everything out its around ten per month. Which isn't bad.
-
I bought TDB but was annoyed by the paywall. They used paywalls again in HoW and I just refused to to buy it because I expected paywalls again in 3 months. And here were are lol. This game just isn't worth it for casual players. And I honestly feel misled. I didn't think DLC would be so absolutely necessary to enjoying the game.

6 RepliesI didnt purchase it either. Destiny was fine before TTK, I felt like i got my money's worth. Now I feel like Bungie is giving me the middle finger constantly while trying to force me into getting TTK. I'm done with the game now, probably time to go back to older games like Crysis :/
