Well you have your red/blue/drag cov to invade people. Lots of weps/spells. Certain PVP areas. Pretty much the same concepts as DS1. Though to summon people, instead of your soul lvl it's based on soul memory(how many souls you've acquired in total). Can summon up to 3 red phantoms or 1 dragon. Its fun!

As long as your in the right soul memory range yes. My friend and I always found each other instantly using the name engraved ring going through the game.
