Why do people like Call of Duty?

I have never been a fan of the series always more of a Halo guy. But I decided to pick CoD ghosts up for the PS4 to lessen the pain of waiting for Destiny. I can honestly say it's probably the most terrible AAA game I have ever played. It's just so empty, no creativity, no world, no sense of self. It's just a 2D hollow experience. I don't understand why people are so obsessed with a game that has no life.

  • Gamers are hypocrites. They clamor for change, and yet when it arrives, they bash it. Activision's execs figured this out. A golden formula. Make the same game and release it annually. Most gamers say they despise it, but they let their wallets speak for them. It's an easy to learn game that rewards EVERYONE, not just the skilled players. The game stays the same each year, so if you were good in the previous COD, you'll be good in the next one. THEN, through brilliant marketing, they were able to make it mainstream. That's why COD is king. Because gamers are hypocrites. It's why Halo is no longer king. The competitive community shot themselves in the foot. They clamor for change and yet despise it when it arrives. Halo 3 was successful because it changed so minimally. It's why the MCC is going to sell well. Gamers hate change. If Bungie re-skinned H3 and released it annually, it'd sell super well. Halo fans bash on COD for not changing, but we're so full of it. We're lining up to buy the MCC, which is a re-skinned version of games we already own! I guarantee you that all 343i has to do to keep the Halo fanbase happy is to keep rereleasing the MCC. The competitive community is not the only problem. We despise any change to Halo's formula (no matter how good it is). The casual community is also clamoring for change and yet they resist it more so than anyone else in COD's case. However, COD's downfall is coming. Their fanbase wants change, yet is HIGHLY conditioned to resist it. They've been playing the same game for 7 years. Either way, COD is boned. Their strategy is going to fail. Think about what 6 years of playing Halo 2 and Halo 2.5, I'm sorry Halo "3" did to the Halo fanbase. That's why Activision switched to Bungie. If they can successfully make Destiny mainstream, they can milk it for all it's worth.

  • It excels due to amazing ad campaigns and stupidity of many consumers. Many people who do not play video games very much have never heard of other games like halo, battlefield, counterstrike, etc. cod 4 was one of the most popular games of all time and it was the first to reach the massive casual audience. This made the game popular and cool and kept it there. Due to ads and people not knowing about many other games people only hear about cod. Do you see any bf or halo ads everywhere on tv. No. Only games I seen on tv are cod and gta. Not only that but many twelve year olds like easy games. Many people who suck at video games such as casuals like cod since its easy and has a lot of playing time. You can skip the menu in two seconds and constantly press x to automatically spawn. In halo they will die a lot more due to skill and have a 5 sec wait. Bf has a ten sec wait time, vehicles that they cannot kill (causing more deaths), skill, and strategic movement and spawning. The thing that annoys me the most is when new players spawn at deployment and instead of getting a vehicle they run to a random location looking for kills rather than an objective when all the enemies are around an objective. They then call the game slow paced and barely have any playing time.

It capitalizes on the addictiveness of instant gratification, much like most popular mobile games. There's a constant feed of reminders that you're accomplishing something when you play the game. Kill times are incredibly quick and in reach (as opposed to halo's dragged out duels) and give you a cool flashy +100 points, and even then, each hitting shot is met with a satisfying hitmarker and audio cue. There are countless unlocks that include level ups, weapons, weapon attachments, and challenges (among a number of others) that ensure that just by playing the game you'll get and feel rewarded. This then becomes so addictive that players will continue to purchase next year's COD, and persist on playing them despite complaining how much worse it is than the last one. Not to mention the attractiveness of mainstream media overall (in which COD resides). And the core gameplay and mechanics themselves (whatever's maintained through each game) are actually pretty robust, which is why there are actually competitive communities surrounding this series (I mean it).

I'll answer this, but I warn everyone...it's going to be a long read. Since MW, the CoD series has excelled because it's a "casual 1st" franchise. CoD diehards will swear up and down it's not...but the fact of the matter is, it IS. The game is marketed to appeal to the masses as a fast paced, pick up and play twitch shooter. A game anyone can pick up the controller, play and meet marginal success with. There's very little skill needed to be successful in CoD games, multiplayer specifically. The person with the fastest reflexes wins...plain and simple. So someone who's never played and FPS game before can be good at CoD if they have natural hand/eye coordination. But that's merely the technical aspect of it. Look at how they advertise the game. Big budget commercials with celebrities and fancy visuals. The same kind of ads you'd see for what? Big budget movie releases. And who do movie studios try to cater their ads for their big budget films? All demographics. Same goes for CoD, with emphasis on bringing in the casual players, and their core fanbase. And that's who suck CoD games up year after year like oxygen. But have you heard anything about the CoD player base growing in the last 3 releases? Nope...you haven't. And here's why. CoD as a franchise reached it's apex with MW2. Why? Because it's the last game in the franchise that truly appeal to people outside of the franchise's main player base. I'll take myself for example. I'm a Battlefield guy. I've been so since BF2. But when MW2 came out, I decided I wanted to give it a try because it had aspects that interested me. Granted, it didn't last long...as I only kept the game for about 7 months, but still. It did enough to make me, and others like me...people who have committed time to other FPS franchises to give it a go. It's been down hill since, as every CoD game has tried to recreate MW2's success and failed miserably. That brings us to the core CoD fanbase. The people who shell out money year after year for pretty much the same game...just with a new coat of paint on it. I won't say that there people are a lil' bit jaded...but if I see a series of games hasn't changed in 2+ releases, I typically stop buying it. It's the reason why I haven't bought nor played a Madden game in 5 years. Same game with a few forgettable features and an updated roster. Whereas a game I do buy yearly, NBA2K...offers enough innovation to warrant me buying the latest version. CoD...doesn't. Hell, the CoD community itself has been critical of the last three releases, MW3, BO2 and Ghosts. But they STILL BUY IT. I don't want to say they're slaves to the game, but when you look at the other options in the genre, the Battlefield, Killzone, Far Cry, Borderlands, Planetside, Counter Strike, Halo and of course more recently Titanfall and Destiny franchises...all of them offer variety in their approach to the genre rather then the "aim, shoot, kill, repeat" style that's been CoD for the better part of the decade now. Variety that requires more then what CoD does to succeed. I've said this on numerous other forums and social media outlets...take an above average player BF4 player and put them in CoD's multiplayer, and within a few matches they'll be melting other people. Put an elite CoD player in BF4 and watch THEM be the ones to get melted. It's true when they say there's no FPS game like CoD. Because CoD is as basic an FPS game as it gets. Twitch reflexes and high ROF weapons remain king of the CoD competitive scene. Almost every Youtuber I've seen play CoD uses sub-machine guns. And let's not even go into the perks system. "let's reward people who get lots of kills with ways to get even MORE kills". Like I've said before on this very forum, I remember when the reward you got for killing a crap ton of people in a match was having those people try to hunt you down for revenge. Again, this falls back to the "casual 1st" aspect of CoD. In closing, CoD = easy mode. It's easy to play. It's easy to succeed in. It's easy to be a 1 person army. Apparently, that's enough to appease millions of people annually. Or at least it was, as there's been a steady decline in sales of the series the last 3 releases. I don't see AW doing much better. I'd say the only reason it'd sell anything close to a significant number is because it's being released across all platforms, current gen, past gen and PC...but so did Ghosts...and Activision still hasn't cracked the "Billion" dollar mark they so adamantly said they were going to reclaim from Rockstar. Like I said, long read. Hopefully people make it to the end of this post.

      •
most terrible AAA game
Looking at your game list you do have an odd playlist ... a LOT of your games don't even make it to double digit percentages before you give up on them. Obviously didn't mind Ghosts that much as it did a lot better than many others. Can see your favorite - "Sly 2" - got to 97% ... and the others in that series also got you going. Guessing those cartoon style kids games appeal to you a lot more?
more of a Halo guy
Would not have thought so ... given Halo 3 has not been played for over a year. The only "halo" you have touched in the last year was Halo 4 (and your a brave man for calling that Halo here on bungie.net) Hopefully the Teen rating of Destiny will remind you of Sly 2.

        • If you jumped on when CoD4 and MW2 were at its peak, then you would have had a great time playing. But now, yeah... Ghosts is not reaching that quality bar those older iterations did. Don't even know where AW is headed but don't care anymore. It lost its glory.

        • Don't judge the franchise off Ghosts alone. Ghosts is the worst CoD game I've ever played! Black ops 1&2, World at War, and most of the modern warfares are great. It's fast paced action with plenty of instant rewards for good performance, and that's what people find so addictive.

Everything after Black Ops 1 was shit. Battlefield 3 was the perfect modern military shooter, and BF4 -blam!-ed it all up. Had DICE/EA stuck with 3 for another year, maybe 4 wouldn't have sucked so hard.

        • I don't exactly like it, but I enjoy gathering up some friends and messing with the tryhards. It's fun to listen to them whine. Other than that, I have no reason to pick up a CoD game. I don't buy one unless 3-4 of my friends have it and I don't play it unless those friends are online at the same time.
