Mincraft is great for building, but lacks direction, leaving you with nothing to do most of the time, as the actual surviving isn’t that hard to do.
Subnautica was nifty, but it was painfully easy. Probably even easier than Minecraft, honestly. I got right to the end on my first try in permadeath mode, and the only reason I didn’t finish it was because a portal glitched me through the ground.
Ark looked alright, but I never cared to play it.
Only vaguely heard of the other two.
The Long Dark seems really nifty. I want to pick it up one of these days. I do wish the game gave me a few more survival tips, though. I felt a little aimless during the trial.
And so, ultimately, the one survival game with perfect difficulty & pacing, where it’s not too hard, but not too easy, and you always have something to do until you’ve done everything is…
Don’t Starve! Both RoG & Shipwrecked are just absolutely amazing. The game does a lot to always keep you on your feet, with Hound attacks, Deerclops and the Sealnado, while also ensuring you always have time to prepare for what’s next. It gives you just enough of a push in the right direction for you to know what to do, but still trusts you enough to figure out most things on your own. There are also a couple dozen different characters, who all play very differently, while still keeping that core gameplay, so if you ever get bored you can always try someone new.
I want to get into Hamlet, but I haven’t been able to crack the code, yet.

Perhaps, but he asked for the best survival game, not best building game. Honestly, Minecraft isn't even a survival game, and I would say I have no idea why it's on this list, if this post was made by anyone but Sire. A quick glance at some other replies, though, and Sire's definition of a survival game is rather loose.

don’t starve is the way. don’t starve together is also the way but social.

Darn straight! I love Don’t Starve! I’ve done practically everything in RoG & Shipwrecked (though I do still need to unlock Woodlegs. Gotten all 3 key individually, but never all together). It’s hard to say which of the two ismy favorite; I really love them both! I haven’t been able to beat Adventure Mode yet, though. I love the idea behind it; a treasure hunt across a survival world, but I am quite bad at it. I’ve wanted to get into Hamlet, but you need to rely on the pig economy too much, and thus far I haven’t been able to crack the code. I can never get enough food. One day, though… I want to play more DST. As a Wendy main, that Wendy rework is literally everything I could have asked for! I can’t get any of my buddies to play with me, though. :(

all my usuals quit too lol. i switch i switch it up with who i play, but i think my most played are maxwell and wortox. went through a wendy phase for a while. it’s a great game, more people need to play it.
-
At least you had usuals. I was able to get my friends to play a whopping 1 game with me. :p
-
I have DST.

You can’t play as him in Hamlet, silly. He’s DST exclusive. :p
-
Doesn’t someone else have a gun? Wheeler was it? Besides, wouldn’t work anyways since the pig economy is now regulated to cleaning up after them and trimming bushes.

That’s the hobo way of life anyway. You’re only supposed to start out that way, before gaining a foothold. It’s the equivalent of huddling besides a fire in Winter, until you learn about Thermal Stones, and how to make warm clothes. I just haven’t found the allegorical warm clothes, yet.
-
Fair. I haven’t played in ages since a server with like, 4 Webber’s and a wortox.

I haven't played DST since we played, but I played the regular Don't Starve a little while ago. Tried Hamlet again. Didn't go very well. It was the first time I've ever actually starved to death. I've died plenty of time, but until just recently I've never actually starved.
