An Honest Defense to Bungie Removing Content (from someone who hates it)

I, just like every other player in this game, have grinded for gear. I tend to get lucky with my rolls (RNGesus be praised), so I didnt have to grind as much for some of my gear, but none the less I have spent countless hours doing the same activity over and over again just for that better roll (be it guns or armor). So, why I am defending bungie on the removal of content? Its simple. The game is at capacity. Currently bungie really cant add in more content to the game. This is why places like the farm haven't been touched at all. Its why content is seasonal and gets removed now. And its why weapons are going to get retired. Each and every weapon is different. When you look past the skin we have values added to every weapon, be it range, aim assist, recoil patterns. We also have a bunch of archetypes. And if we want more weapons and content, we have to let some of it go. Now, I know what you might be thinking, "Weapons cant take up that much space" or "What about armor". Well, yes, weapons might not take up too much space, but its still space that can be dropped. Space that NEEDS to be dropped if we want any significant content to be added. And for armor. They already made that change. All armor is the same with the skin being the only difference. The stat is just that, a stat. No armor is better or worse than the others in a particular field, unlike weapons. This is also why they stated exotics arnt being retired. Its not a case of removing what we are using, but rather, removing what we dont use (and yes, maybe trying to fix the meta a bit). And, you might also be thinking. "Theres no way that the game is running out of room". You are wrong. Why do you think we lost gear twice with updates? Its (speculation) because it was overwritten due to lack of space. Its the same reason load times are slower now than y1(f in the chat for console players). So please. Stop hounding bungie for the decision to retire weapons. I hate it just as much as you do, and I for one do not support the way that this game is going, but I also can understand whats going on. Destiny 2 was built on the older generation of the current generation of consoles, and it was built with a engine that simply cant handle whats being thrown at it. Since forsaken their focus has been on destiny 3. This is something that we simply cant change. And although we DO deserve better than what we are being given now, these changes are necessary for the continuity of the game until that D3 release.

  • See, they said they're placing power caps on stuff because there's too much to balance. But since power doesn't matter at all in the crucible, they will STILL have to balance everything regardless. Let's look for the real reason..

    • You're entirely wrong, but part of your reasoning is on the right track. It's not that they don't have room to add more weapons (they're going to keep adding weapons), but that it's too hard to balance new weapons with all the currently existing ones.

    • Good post. It’s refreshing and rare to see someone try to understand what it takes to make a game like this possible, rather than just rage whenever they don’t get what they want. You did get one thing incorrect though. The need to retire weapons isn’t about hardware limitations. It’s about basic GAME DESIGN. Bungie has been violating one of the most basic rules of game design for loot games. They did it because they thought they could get away with it, and it was a path of least resistance to keeping people happy in the short term. Every loot game is a delicate dance of player power. The loot we chase is in-game power. Without power to chase—-loot incentive—-players become bored and stop playing. But if you let them accumulate too much power—-power creep—-the game ceases to be a challenge and can become a bit of a joke. So every loot game has to find a way to give you enough power to keep you playing, but TAKE AWAY enough of it so that you don’t become so powerful you break the game. The overwhelming majority of loot games do this by retiring gear as Bungie now plans to do (finally). The fix the gears power (item) level....and you can’t change it. So when the power ceiling is raised (expansion or dlc), that weapon is no longer the best, so now you’re motivated to get something more powerful to replace it. Power creep is managed, loot incentive is preserved. The problem with Destiny is that a Bungie lests is just keep endlessly increasing the power level of weapons. So once you have the best weapon....there’s no need to get anything else or use anything else. So you strangle loot incentive. So Bungie has been thrashing about for four years trying to manage this problem without retiring gear....and they failed. They’ve tried adding more powerful gear....pinnacles....and it broke the game. Bungie is still trying to clean up that mess. They’ve tried nerfing weapons to knock them off the top spot and allow room for other gear to be desirable..,,but that is making players mad too. They’ve tried forcing weapons into a bland sameness to control power creep (where we are right now)...but it’s slowly destroying loot incentive. As people sense that we’ve hit a power ceiling, and we are grinding for the same weapons over and over again. Just with different skins.

    • Making guns not work in endgame content is not going to free up design space in the game.....

      • Space you say? dump titan, no one would miss it, and all of the Emperor Calas crap, which is way overdone, oh and all of the old campaign quests that give you NOTHING for completing them, and toss in Ikora, and all of PvP which doesn't work half decent, and Gambit, which 7 people play worldwide... there's a bunch of free space to create new content. or perhaps Dev simply don't want to spend the time to create new content in an old game that they're trying to ignore. but the reason for retiring weapons is not space of course. it's so you'll grind for new weapons, and it's easy to manage without a lot of man hours being put in...

        • Well put. People need to realise things like seasons, bare minimal content etc probably isn't what Bungie wants to do, it's what they have to do. You gotta remember when d2 launched, the plan was probably to have d3 ready to go in 3 years, so the game wasn't built with adding so much to it for so long. It sucks that their lack of foresight is being passed along to the players, but that's what we have to live with now. Just so I'm clear, I'm not saying the filesize is getting too big, that's Bungies excuse. I'm saying the game wasn't built to last 3+ years.

        • very possible , I have noticed an over abundance of bugs since season of the undying .the strange red/blue/green effects after talking to venders and shuddering framrates from Playing gamebit and sundial. You think it has to do with the game engine bungee used?

          • The criticism is fair. Forced expiration dates can defeat the purpose of grinding for god rolls when RNG can take months to give you the exact gun you want. Complacency accomplishes nothing.

            • ? Retiring old weapons wont suddenly make the game run better on old hardware. And if it’s over abundance, variety’s rarely an issue.

              • Couldn't they just take out all year 1 guns there must be a minimum of 100 then use that space for new guns?

It isnt at capacity. Bungie has 2 more years of content in them and they've gotten lazy. Expect reskinned Venus and the Dreadnaught to come back.
