Outer Wilds

I'm gonna start out by saying Outer Wilds could be the sleeper hit of 2019. Being out on PC and Xbox for a while now, it only recently came to PS4 - and I think this release put it on the internet map for me to see. So, Outer Wilds is "Groundhog Day" in space. You wake up to your alien colony ready to launch into outer space on a mission to find a missing... Er... Person? Anyway, as you start your adventure and travel in any direction you please, you're blissfully unaware that you're 22 minutes from death by supernova - only to wake up again and relive those 22 minutes. However, this time, you've retained the knowledge gained from your brief travels, and you're ready to take to the skies again! This gameplay loop lends to some interesting detective work as you move from planet to planet finding any breadcrumbs to connect to your previous adventures. Uncovering the seemingly self contained stories around the universe has been a treat. Given the freeform nature of the game, you have the ability to step into them at any point, but it was still satisfying to flesh out the world building surrounding it, or the events leading up to what I initially found. I've found myself matching patterns, runes, audio logs, music and languages, and there's still a heap for me to uncover. Actual planetary exploration has been equally enjoyable. The developers have really put some care into making them all feel interesting in their own way. Obviously, with the game resetting every 20 minutes, they aren't enormous open worlds to explore, but they can easily fill out a couple of sessions. A shining example is a desert planet that is in the gravitational pull of another. While one side of the planets nooks and crannies are being filled to the brim with sand, the other side is sinking to reveal obelisks and structures. While I'm not certain, this universe might not be as expansive as say, Elite Dangerous or No Man's sky, but what they have created is full of mystery and intrigue. Planets feel fleshed out and interesting, as opposed to just being environments to land on. Don't get me wrong, though, the universe is still pretty chunky. I think this game will mainly appeal to people who like to piece together their own stories and do some detective work, as well as people who enjoy the slower pace of exploration and discovery. All in all, I encourage anyone to pick it up for its - frankly - more than reasonable price.
