Star Wars Debate

So I've been on Instagram, seeing a bunch of people argue with with one another over whether the Last Jedi was good or not. Now I fall on the side that it wasn't, but it did have some good parts to it, I'm not going to act like a toxic star wars fan and argue with everyone till my dying breath. I am however wanting to ask you guys if you prefer the canon version, the legends version, or maybe they should've mixed it up a little bit and had a bit of both?

    • Last Jedi was like the Warmind Expansion. Nice graphics, bad content... unfleshed our characters, boring objectives, etc. I would use CoO but that just wasn’t good. and Rose sucks.

      • 1. I prefer the Legends version. Simply because that is a more "realistic" portrayal of what would have likely happened after the fall of the Empire. (Whch is understandable because it was fleshed out over decades, compared to only a few years). But I understand why Disney did what they did. They wanted to create their own stories without being handcuffed by 20 years of lore from other sources. 2. I enjoyed "The Last Jedi" thoroughly. 3. There is a problem in the Star Wars Universe that Disney INHERITED when they bought the property from George Lucas. Lucas created it...but didn't have the stomach to actually resolve. it. The issue is there is this conflict between fans who see the series as a Modern Myth (which was Lucas' orginal intent, drawing heavily from the "Hero With A Thousand Faces") ...and those fans who see the series as a Modern Fairy Tale. The conflict is a bitter one, and has been going on for over 20 years. The issue is that Myths---in a nutshell---shows us how Life really is, and tries to explain WHY it is that way and shows us how we deal with it and evolve from it. Fairy Tales, OTOH, tend to be morality tales that show us who we WISH life would be, and how people SHOULD be. The most popular movies in the series (The Original Triology, Rogue One) are movies that can be seen as both a Myth....and a Fairy Tale. So they satisfy both halves of the fan base. The problem is when someone creates a movie in the series that is more self-consciously "Mythic". The half of the fanbase that enjoys the myth-making enjoy the movies. While those who want the series to be a Fairy Tale...tend to lose their minds. This problem first occured with the Prequels. Lucas made a series of movies that were PURE myth making. Telling us about the decline and fall of a corrupt democracy from within. As well as the tragic fall into evil and darkness of well-intentioned, but fatally-flawed hero (Anakin Skywalker). When viewd from that angle...the Prequels are great stuff. Though they suffer from Lucas' limitations as a story teller. He's great at story arcs and large ideas....but tends to write clunky dialog. (The same problems plague Episodes 4-6, but the Fairy Tale crowd just over looks them.) But all the things that make the Prequels work well as myth-making, makes it an unsatisfying fairy tale. So came the first wave of backlash. However, instead of standing up for his work.....Lucas basically just said "screw this" and withdrew from movie-making. I think he felt that the franchise had taken on a life of its own, and he just wasn't free to do with it what he wanted any more. He also didn't need the money or the headaches involved with trying to fight to define his artistic vision. So the issue was left unresolved...... until The Last Jedi. The Last Jedi is like The Prequels. A movie that is pure myth-making. It is a meditation on FAILURE and CHANGE. What do you do when everything around is collapsing, and everyone you look to is failing you and disappointing you.....or you are seen as a failure and disappointment to them. ...and there is NOTHING you can do to change any of this. YOu are POWERLESS to stop it? Great stuff of myth. Lousy fairy tale. The movie basically look at different ways of coping. Luke Skywalker runs away and withdraws from the world. He can't handle living with his failures. Others push back...and pound away at things with a hammer trying to FORCE the world to bend to their will. Po Dameron and Kylo Ren fall into this category ("Let go of the Past. Kill it if you have to.) Others FLOW with the change. When they find that they can't force the world to bend to their will.....THEY change in order to find a way to adapt and endure. This kind of "heroism'---imo---is ALIEN to white males. But its DEEPLY engrained into my culture as an African-American (we've been fighting for our freedom for 300 years), and is also part of the female worldview. So it is understandable that leaders who demonstrate this quality the most are all female: Leia Organa Solo, Rey, The Vice Admiral who sacrifices herself to facilitate the escape of the remnants of the Resistance (Laura Dern). Even when Luke abandon's his self-imposed exile, he returns to the world in this same fashion. Sacrificing himself to create a martyr and "hero" that will live on. A symbol that will have more impact than he can as an single individual. Great stuff. But once again. It makes for a lousy fairy tale....and fans who demand that the series provide them this fairy tale have---once again---lost their -blam!-ing minds.

        • I'll start with this. I really like the cinematography of The Last Jedi. It's pretty well shot. Apart from the abundance of mistakes in the throne room fight. However that's the only positives I can give it. I started thinking it was average until I saw it again. It's easily in my top ten worst movies because of just how bad the script was. It was written to be subversive for the sake of being subversive. To the point where the film will actively contradict itself from scene to scene. I would have trimmed at least 30 - 40 minutes of the movie to remove plot points that don't go anywhere. I'm looking at you Canto Bight. The film also has this weird feel where it's get to the third act, the throne room, and then just keeps going. My biggest point is just how it attempts to completely undermine both TFA and the OT. It turns Luke into someone I couldn't call Luke. It wastes Snoke with one of the stupidest scenes where Snoke proclaims 'Kylo will never betray me!' to 30 seconds later of Kylo betraying him. That's closer to something I would see in a Naked Gun movie then a serious Sci-fi movie. I could keep going but I'll end it with this. I hate it so much because it just seems to go nowhere. Oh and Legends all the way. We got robbed of a Thrawn trilogy. F--k the idiots in charge for that alone.

            • I honestly thought there were too many loose ends in it. It would have been a perfectly fine standalone movie, but it was a crummy sequel. For one it dismissed all the questions you had from the first one (Snoke, Luke, and Rey) and almost mocked you for asking them. (The way they worded Rey’s background) Furthermore it couldn’t even carry its own plot devices. (Rose arc, the weird shiny bounty hunter, Leia’s arc, and Poe’s plot) very few of its own plots made sense. I’m not even a Star Wars fan, and I disliked it. I still haven’t even seen the bloody prequels.

I’m not familiar with the “Legends version”, and I happened to enjoy “The Last Jedi” even though I thought it was deeply flawed. With the Last Jedi, I enjoyed the Rey, Luke, and Kylo-Ren story arcs. I know that a lot of ‘Star Wars fans’ have taken issue with Luke’s story arc in particular, but to me it seemed logical. Luke has always been impulsive and emotional, so to me, it’s believable that for a single split second, he would have ‘thought’ about killing Ben Solo once he sensed that Ben was halfway down the path to the Darkside. And, that split second of dark impulses was enough to push Ben over the edge. A lot of fans saw this as an assignation on Luke’s character, and how it would be something he’d never, ever do, but I disagree. Luke is very much his father’s son, the big difference between him and Anakin, is that Luke would see him self approaching the edge, and stop before he crosses it, but he would always come close to that edge. I also accepted the fact that the new movies weren’t about the original characters ( Luke, Leia, and Han ) once it was revealed that Rey was force sensitive. I went into The Last Jedi expecting Luke to die, so his arc didn’t surprise me. If you listen to The Last Hope Director commentary, George Lucas actually explains why he had to kill off Obi-One in the Last Hope. The second Rey force manipulated that Storm trooper in The Force Awakens, I knew Luke had to die, for the same reason that George Lucas had to kill Obi-One. I didn’t like the Finn, Rose, and Poe Dameron story arcs. With the Finn and Rose story arc, it’s basically a glorified fetch quest that goes nowhere, and ends in failure ( and puts the resistance in a worse position than where they began out ). I’m not fan of storylines that go nowhere. It feels like my time is being wasted. And the Poe storyline is filled with plot holes ( there is absolutely no logical reason why Vice Admiral Holdo wouldn’t explain her plan Poe, especially after he calls her out about it in front of the the whole entire senior bridge crew. And the fact that Poe was able to start a rebellion suggests that no one else knew her plan either ). That whole entire subplot was poorly written. I understand why it was written the way it was ( shock value ), but the execution was no better than on a Game of Thrones, where Viserion is shot out of the air and killed, where logic was thrown out the door in order to get a reaction from the audience.

It did some things really well. Here’s what I liked: That Snoke died. That was a major twist for me. Although they should have developed him more and given him more backstory. But this was the first time we have seen a sith kill his master and try to recruit a new apprentice in the movies. I liked that Kylo stayed bad. I like how they portray him as a young brat who wants to be great. Here’s what I hated: Leia coming back. I hated when she survived. They would have been a GREAT point for the movie, Kyle kills his mother, and it pushes Luke to fight the empire once leia is dead. But no, she came back in a stupid movie plot device way. Snoke having NO BACKSTORY!! THAT SUCKED!!! THAT LUKE WAS A FREAKIN ILLUSION AT THE END!! HE SHOULD HAVE GONE BERSERK AND DESTROYED ALL OF THEM IN A HUGE EPIC BATTLE!! Also, thrawn should have been the enemy. I would have loved that

I thought Episode 7 was great. Good plot, great set up and characters. But episode 8 didn’t follow up on it, we had no further character development, Snoke, for all the theories, turned out to be no one of importance. The plot wasn’t great and the introduction of Rose was kinda weird. I thought he had a thing for Rey? But I guess they wanted her to get together with Kylo? Also, the whole thing with Vice Admiral Pink Hair was weird and even when she nobly yeeted herself through that bigass Mothership (which, I will admit, was a cool shot and awesome to see) I still felt like she should have relayed her plan to her top pilot instead of hiding it for whatever reason. Regardless, it wasn’t as bad as the Phantom Menace, which was just... horrible. Phantom menace would’ve been exponentially improved if Anakin had been, like, 12 instead of 8. It made his whole romance with Padme really creepy and it felt like pedophilia (padme was 14, but Natalie Portman was in her 20s). That, and take out those stupid Midi-chlorians, take out Jar Jar Binks, and it would’ve been an okay movie. I don’t know. Being a Star Wars geek, I have high hopes that Episode 9 will be better. As for all the hate on Solo, I don’t really understand it. I thought it was a good movie! He wasn’t Harrison Ford, of course, but the movie was true to the character and explored the more “grey area” side of Star Wars, rather than just the usual Good vs. Evil.

                              • I loved episodes 1-6. Episode 7 was ok. I did not like tlj. It felt like there were too many twists in the plot. Certain side stories really weren't necessary. There was a lack of character development with any of the new characters. Anything that was supposed to be humorous wasn't funny. It felt like I went to an episode of whose line is it anyway and everything was just improvised. Just because there's twists in a movie doesn't make it good. The surprises were either negative or non existent. I'll still go see episode 9 because of the name. But I'm not excited about it.

                                      • In my opinion it was a bad movie. It didn’t ruin Star Wars or any of that drama queen shit, it was just a poorly written movie, with a bad director. As for the new cannon (or canon, I’ve seen it spelled both ways) I think it’s mostly fine. Legends did go a bit off the rails in certain areas, but I think certain things were awesome in legends. If anything ruined Star Wars, it’s rebels. F*** that show. I still enjoy Star Wars and I’ll see episode 9 just to see how it ends.

Instead we got busted up hobo Luke being grumpy about the porgs on his front lawn. That in of itself was an injustice. I just don't like the storyline, the characters and the Empire 2.0 feeling to both of these newer movies. Too many Wtf moments. Rogue One was much better even with it's issues.

As a stand alone film, it was fine. As the 8th in a series, I felt it was an injustice. I've said it before and I'll say it again, The Last Jedi felt (to me) like Rian Johnson's personal fanfiction. And the worst kind of fanfiction at that. The kind that says "f*** ya'll" to the the community and the established lore to play out as your own personal wish fulfillment fantasy. But again, in a bubble it's enjoyable.
