Trials of the Nine was PvP.
It makes sense that PvP should be part of the Nine quest, go in there and emote like everyone else.

It was a bad choice to make the last step require PvP, but people make bad choices all the time. No need to try and justify it with Lore.

It exists in the Crucible section on the Triumphs page. Lots of things don't exist in D2, like Crota for example. He's just gone. Mythoclast, No Time to Explain etc. Lore is Lost Over Recent Eras. It exists but doesn't.
