Somehow I'm down to one dog and he's 14. No one has dumped any strays and no family member needs to rehome a dog. So I'm in a unique position for me, I may actually get to choose the type of dog this time.
I'm looking for:
an intelligent breed
under 50 pounds
good with kids
prefer to avoid long hair or major shedding
any ideas?
I do have a large fenced in yard and acres of woods and pastures.

2 RepliesAlaskan malamutes, because weight restrictions are not body positive! /s Although malamutes are my favorite.

Have you considered a Snoop or a Nate?

2 RepliesBoxers are great. I have 2. Females are usually around 55 lbs, males can get as big as 75 lbs. They’re great with kids. Some say they’re not very smart, but it has everything to do with their training. My female we got as a puppy, trained constantly since 10 weeks, and is the smartest dog you’ve ever met. My male that is a rescue that we got when he was 2 years old is a -blam!-ing idiot, and nothing will ever chance that. They will bark at everything, and a lot of people misunderstand they’re nervousness for aggression, but they’re really just lean muscular 60 lbs lap dogs.

If you have the time and energy, you can't go wrong with a Jack Russel terrier. Be warned though. The breed can be a handful and aren't meant for everyone.

1 ReplyEdited by pValue2010: 9/29/2017 12:12:22 PMI've always been a fan of checking out the local shelter to see if you immediately connect with any of the animals. I've always liked terriers (non yappy ones of course). Don't go too small, though, because the Napolean complex is real with some of those dogs.

3 RepliesIf your going for a vocal and neurotic experience... Go Pomeranian. The little ones. They are nuts.

Yorkies are small little guys, they don't shed at all, they are great with kids as well. Pretty damn smart too

How about a miniature dachshund with smooth hair? They are loyal dogs and are great with kids. Here's my mini red and standard black. https://i.imgur.com/xudY9cm.jpg

I have a golden doodle and I can recommend them to you. They should fit the criteria, and you can get one that's more poodle than golden for even less shedding (that's what we did because my parents are allergic). Also there are minis if you need a smaller one. Ours is a mini that was born about 9 months ago, I think he's around 30-35 pounds.

Labrador retrievers are good dogs
