24 episodes + 2 old movies (one of which is a rehash of the series [skip this one] and the other is a "do over" of the last two episodes [watch this one]) + 3 new movies (with a forth to come out) that are a reimagining of the original series Time wise it's: - The original series (≈8 hours) - [i]End of Evangelion[/i] (≈90 minutes) - [i]Rebuild of Evangelion[/i] (≈100 minutes each)

Do I need to watch the movies?

I'd recomend [i]End of Evangelion[/i]. The rebuild is unnecessary, but still worth it. It's like [i]Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood[/i] in that it retells the "same story" but makes some drastic changes to the narrative (adding new events, characters, etc)
