Edited by SoullessRaptor: 8/27/2016 11:19:34 PMTrigger warnings make sense, simply as a heads-up that something will be either incredibly controversial or emotionally damaging. EG, history classes that delve into really touchy periods of history, or classes that will cover issues that hit close to people.

Isn't the point of college to receive an education? Part of this education is exposure to new ideas, point of views, to be exposed to the real world and not the sheltered environment your parents brought you up in? What -blam!- is going on today with kids that they have become so fragile? Once out of college there is no safe zone or trigger warnings. It's like jumping into shark infested waters where it is kill or be killed. Everyone needs to grow a pair.

4 RepliesI'm in high school and don't really get either of these. Why would you need a safe space, literally ever? I could somewhat understand trigger warnings, only on sensitive topics though. The things people find offensive now are a bit ridiculous IMO.

10 RepliesEdited by Tosevite 187: 8/26/2016 5:52:30 PMI'm going to go out on a limb and say most colleges don't have designated safe spaces which is almost always poorly defined to the point it nearly has no meaning anymore beyond the Internet joke nor do most colleges have trigger warnings. Possibly state schools are different, but I will bet you these ridiculous safe spaces and trigger warnings only occur at a very very small minority of colleges and universities and therefore they are the ones who get press and media coverage. I'd love to hear of anyone who currently is attending a college and witnessed a trigger warning or walked through a safe space

1 ReplyAre safe spaces actual areas in US college campuses, like rooms you can go into? And do some textbooks really come with trigger warnings like "this textbook contains controversial information and may trigger some readers. Read at your own discretion"? I don't live in the States so I don't know

17 RepliesEdited by MongotheDread: 8/26/2016 7:00:50 PMThey should go one step farther and have "verbally threatening areas". Where they have someone just stand there insulting/triggering everyone that walks by.

Might be paraphrasing a bit there lol.

As for safe spaces, the only "safe spaces" I knew of in college were the places where you could smoke without the campus cops possibly dropping in for a visit.

While I agree with the university's stance, I have to question your desire to purposefully try to start an argument by headlining your topic with a fabricated quote.

So when can we expect the provost at UoC to invite the head of ISIS to give the conviction speach and award them with an honorary PhD? Maybe too edgy??

Because I'm NEET.

South Park already put the idiots in their place. Their satire should be mandatory for anyone who wants to take SJW causes seriously.

Don't expect safety in general.

9 RepliesEdited by Archangel: 8/26/2016 10:48:58 AMI do agree here. A university should be a place where your thoughts and views should be challenged, allowing people to learn and mature as human beings. From debating people online, I've been hit with the 'safe space' slur every now and then. Being Australian I wasn't familiar with the concept of 'safe spaces' in the US. Digging online I found that they refer to safe spaces designated in college campuses which typically consists of authoritarian leftists like third way feminists, anti-capitalists, socio-anarchists and so called "SJWs" who vehemently silence any opposing views. While I do consider myself progressive, I'm baffled by both the concept of safe spaces, and that some angry conservative sometimes tells me to 'go back to your safe space!'. It's sad that I would be lumped into a group of people that I just want nothing to do with. Most conservatives and progressives are just your average day to day Joe as a matter of fact. If you open up and stop limiting yourself to far-right echo chambers, and sit down and be willing to discuss viewpoints and the reasons for holding them, you'll really find that we all want the same thing and maybe even agree more than we realize.

1 ReplyThe fact that a college, which is supposed to challenge your ideas and beliefs on a regular basis, is considered a rare kind when it refuses to have safe spaces is -blam!-ing pathetic.
