A serious analysis regarding the state of Trials of Osiris

If you're one of those who have a million flawless, who carry people for money, etc etc I'll start by saying: move along, this read is not intended for your type. This is for the majority, the average, maybe not really casual players. As a beta/day one player have been through all the buffs, nerfs, patches, content draught, etc etc... But I still remember when Trials was introduced for the first time. Had a couple of mates on at the time and we went in straight away. We didn't know about lighthouse, or boons. We had a 9-1 win that day and it was fun. Note, all 3 of us were your casual crucible players with KDs ranging between 0.90 - 1.1. The discovery of the lighthouse gave new meaning to the extended weekend. And before time were were making trips there on a weekly basis. Sometimes the road was nice and easy, sometimes was rocky and many times we couldn't make it but at all times we enjoyed playing. We've seen the meta reigning. We've seen the power of arc bolts and fire bolts. Nonetheless, we had FUN. Now lets look at the state of Trials since the April Update... Changes to the matchmaking system created this highly specialized fireteams whose sole purpose is to crush every enemy. What happens when a group of average players decides to play Trials? They are forced to play for bounties. Insignificant rewards that serve only as a reminder that you are not good enough to win your 9 matches. A reminder that now you are part of a group of players who have been locked out of content by the same people who in the past have criticized the player base for restricting other player's access to content based on what kind of weapon they carried in their heavy slot. That's correct, Bungie has decided you no longer have the right to enjoy part of a game you have purchased, as long with all the expansions, and even though with many issues you still kept coming back and supporting it because you believed in its promise. Hang on, what about carries you say? I almost forgot those. Ok, Bungie didn't lock you out of content, as long as you are willing to pay people to take you there. The problem is, where's the sense of accomplishment? I want to play every weekend, and win some or lose some, but be able to say I had a good time doing it and not pay someone to do all the work for me while I just sit on the back looking out the window. Why does a team have to play another simply based on the number of wins? For some getting those 4 or 5 wins is hard work, for others is a walk in the park. Why not leave is to chance as it was in the past? And what's more, why make a team play against the same team twice in a row? Not happy you got steamrolled once you have to go through it twice? Not to mention the red bars everywhere... After all, you have to be matched to someone on the same number of wins, no matter if that's on the other side of the globe or not, right? WRONG It wouldn't be hard to bring back the fun, all that needs to be done is go back to the old matchmaking. And for those Trials beasts out there, why not make it that once you have been flawless once in every character you no longer get matched with people who are trying to get their first win? I know it's not ideal but Im sure many would appreciate being able to access content they have paid for. Not all can be Crucible beasts. Understand your player base. Why not make Trials as accessible as Iron Banner? What do you guys think? Should Trials be fun and accessible again? EDIT: I would like to acknowledge all the very good replies and very good arguments regarding this issue. Keep it up guys, maybe we will get heard. Never lose faith lol EDIT 2: Been thinking about a solution. Short term is back to Year 1 format. But why not for Destiny 2 maybe have ranked playlists? Im not sure if the whole light system will go forwards but if it is people would play a few matches, get ranked and placed on a bracket for the month. Your rewards would be tired to your rank. The same rewards but with difference in light level. So the lowest tier will reward you same light as you current are, the one above +2 light.. And so on. I think that could be an interesting alternative.

  • I watched a couple videos last week of two pro ToO streaming teams playing each other for their 9th win or loser out. Got to see/hear both perspectives. The ending was so much fun to watch. That's how it should always be.

  • No. If you're not good enough to complete something, you don't deserve the rewards. Simple as that.

I wish someone at Bungie would just come out and call this thing what it is. That it's not supposed to be fun, that it's not supposed to be casual. People don't seem to get this, and that is why, obviously, they wind up not having any fun with it. There is nothing wrong with saying hey, this is how we want it, casuals need not apply. I really don't know what they can do here, honestly. People that share the argument of skill and earning your way, have a point, and people that say the deck is stacked against them, also have a point. The only thing I can think of, and it's just a suggestion. I'm sure someone will say it's a stupid one, but wtv, ) is to not make the Lighthouse a thing anymore. If a team goes flawless, give them full armor sets, or heavy drops, meaning more than one weapon, keep the shaders and emblems as they are. As for the Lighthouse, just make it a Crucible quest chain they everyone can participate in. It doesn't have to be an easy one, it could be sort of like the Mountaintop or wtv. The point being this social space has been around a while now, and if that's really the thing players want to see or experience, just make happen already. Who cares? The elitists have owned it a while now, I'm sure they wouldn't care that much if it was no longer exclusionary. At this point, for those players who consistently beat the crap out of weaker teams, I believe they could honestly care less about the Lighthouse, You want to make the argument they have to earn their way, blah, blah, fine you can, but this is a video game, try to look at it from the perspective of players who love this game, enjoy and adore the lore, and just want to experience all it has to offer. They don't need to be in the '' Special club '' by getting destroyed in matches with predetermined odds already stacked against them due to horrific matchmaking. But whatever they do or don't do, someone isn't going to like it. So to those players that haven't been there, you need to resign yourselves to the fact that it's probably never going to change, and just regard it as one of those things in Destiny you couldn't get to do, and move on. But one last tiny thing. To those that say get better, here is the thing, you can't get better if you can't build confidence, and you can't build confidence without experience. You can get better all day long, the problem is the players you are facing are already better than you, because why, it's more than just skill, it's experience. So when players opt out it no longer matters if they are improving, because they never get a real opportunity to build on their improvement, and translate it into experience.

SBMM is your friend And you probably just don't deserve to be flawless unless you are willing to pay money to get carried and support someone who actually took the time to master the game.

I actually think the idea of 'carrying' sucks, I am a fairly decent player, who has been improving and getting my 9-0s more. But why , why oh why should one person ( I'm talking, like 2.00+ kd ) be able to take two not so good players into trials, which is supposed to be a team mode and have ridiculous amounts of success? I know it's quite hard to answer but in hoping yoy understand what I mean.

        • Why is TOO card based matchmaking and not SBMM? Arguably, Trials is the only PvP game type that needs SBMM as a priority.

          • One fix is make it a one ticket run. Once you go flawless your out for the weekend with that character. No more carries, no more weekend kill feast, no more tea bagging, emblem matching, red bar Ahats with mod controllers.

            • Great read and i agree with all what was said. If you go to the lighthouse you move into another pool, this gives everyone a chance. The lighthouse is for everyone, lets not discriminate Bungie.

            • First match in Trials is always the most fun. After that you just get repeatedly shafted by people with amazing skill/or red bars. Ive literally no idea how they can put someone like myself who can barely get 3 wins at trials against a team all with adept weapons and who are adept teabaggers. Its soul destroying at best. Sportsmanship in gaming is a lost art form.

            • I completely get what you're saying. I have never played Trials prior to the April update, I have never made it passed 7 wins. And that was a MASSIVE struggle. I play every weekend only for the bounties, because making it passed 4-5 wins has become unrealistic for the majority of people. And the drop rates of gear on Gold Tier rewards is ridiculous. I have got many weapons and armour multiple times but have yet to be rewarded a Doctrine of Inward lamp. And the only reason I Co tinge to play is in hopes of obtaining. Once I do, I will be completely done with Trials until it's fixed. Trials isn't the only portion of Destiny that is completely broken. But Bungie don't seem to know how to run an update with breaking the one prior to it.

            • Don't be mad ur bad at something that all the top tier destiny players play in lmao it's the only thing they think takes skill in this game so that's what there gonna play. And not everyone charges money for a carry. The only thing I ask when I carry is for them to add me that's it

Last night I made two separate post looking for a couple players willing to go in for bounties and didn't get any takers. And I don't blame them one bit. I know we are just bait for the big fish. But I still like the competition and learning experience. I've changed my tune lately only due to the fact that I can't even get people to go in anymore to due the extreme carnage. Basically, it's just not fun. I get it. So do they and they just opt out. Understandable. Only posts I saw last night were, looking for sweeties for flawless. Requirement: rediculous kd and Elo score, emblems, multiple year two flawless wins, and the always important, don't waste my time, I'll kick you is you're not a god like me and don't lie about stats....I'll check! I mean all you have to do is read the posts to see how -blam!-ing ignorant trials has become.

The real issue is restriction. Ghorn was nerfed because ppl restrict ppl from raids. Same thing happen with ToO must have minimum of 1.3+ with ELO of 1400+ must been flawless Y2 multiple times will be checking. 0__0 and it's still is take a look at #recruitment in the weekends. Skolas and Quadron were nerfed because they were "too hard". I personally think they were easy but that's just me. ToO for 1.5+ K/D team is as hard as a regular strike. For ppl with 0.5-1.2 K/D there only choose is a Carrie by doing the fallowing. -have a good friends -Stream Carrie by being a sub ((pay money)) -new streamer with a raffle ((RNG)) -get Someone to Carrie you by paying them ((you'll find some in LFG and #recruitment in the weekend)) There is a fix but Bungie won't do it because ToO is a free advertisement. Double standards at its finest.

                  • I think if they made it to where once that character has gone flawless, they're put into a different matchmaking tier where they only face other players that have gone flawless it would be the best option as long as those players that win get even better rewards. The only thing I have a problem with is the whole "restricting players access to content" BS. If you're playing trials you're accessing the content you paid for. You didn't pay for the rewards you get from going flawless. That would be like someone complaining that Bungie is restricting them from accessing content because they aren't able to beat the raid. That's the only part I have an issue with, I completely support them tweaking matchmaking to make it easier for more players to go flawless.

                  • None of this is true. You're just salty that you can't go to the lighthouse and win 7 matches in something the best players play in... And there's nothing wrong with carries. If someone is willing to pay to go to the lighthouse that's not your concern.

                    • I i always feel like trials should have a freelance mode, or that there should be a rumble version of trials The trials we have now is way to heavily favoring snipers, primaries simply can't go up against snipers any more and shotguns with their ghost bullets can never hope to be as versatile as the last word.

1 RED BAR and YELLOW BAR players should be BANNED. When we are playing against green bar players, we make a chance. As soon as we get red/ yellow bar players against us, the chance is big that we will loose. PLUS!!!!! There are too many players playing in GOD MODE. They just rush, knowing that your bullets won't hurt them.............................and their bullets seem to be extra explosive damage special black market bullets ;) Are those players living close to Destiny servers? Do they have a specific internet provider? I really wonder..... Skills don't matter so much in Destiny's PvP. Everybody who plays Destiny from day 1 and the other FPS, has skills.

Why do u think bunnies nerfs stuff??? Why do u think they buff non skill required weapons? Because garbage kids complain about any and every little thing. GG this arguement is ended

                      • How would applying the old MM make your lighthouse trips any easier/more fun? Those same teams would still be playing against you at some point. And for those, who still don't seem to understand what ToO is about, I'll give you an example: I play Guild Wars 2. I'm not so good at PvP. The ranked PvP playlist has some unique rewards in there. Should I be able to acquire them even though I'm not skilled enough? No, ofc not. But I've paid for that game too like those who are able to get to the high leagues. Still no, I'm not entitled to those rewards. ToO is the same.
