Effective Sniping Requires: Mobility, a steady hand, good hand-eye coordination, and superb aim.
Effective Shotgunning Requires: Situational Awareness, Quick Reactionary time, and the ability to prioritize targets.
Now let me say this, I'm not saying shotgunning is harder then sniping. The average sniper is better then an average shotgunner. But a good shotgunner is definitely better then most snipers.
Sniping isn't as easy as it looks, but you have to look at a few things.
If you put a sniper at one end of the smaller hallway and a group of 4 on the other, a good sniper would have no problem taking them out 9/10 times that situation happens.
Now
If you put a shotgunner in a room with multiple exits with four enemies around him, they have to worry about a few things.
1. How many enemies are here
2. What equipment do I have to help me survive
3. Which enemy is closest, and which presents the biggest threat.
4. Is there anyway to get out of this alive, if not, how many can I take down.
Now before people attack me saying I posted this because I can't snipe, I usually play on striker titan, and shotguns compliment the class well, also because titan skating is extremely effective once learned. (As seen here https://youtu.be/3zuv1awyl0w)
Because the amount of hatemail I get for titan skating up to people at 100 MPH and sticking the barrel of my shotty down thier throat is ridiculous. (No I don't use Juggernaut, Shoulder Charge builds up way to much speed for me not to use it, I dont tank the shots, I just move fast enough to disorient people)
Basically, in terms of learning curve.
Good Sniper > Good Shotgunner > Average Sniper > Average Shotgunner

For a shotgunner, death is a natural part of the game, for snipers that usually hang back it isn't, who do you think got shotguns nerfed? A lot of snipers who were getting outmaneuvered by a skilled shotgunner, and just about everyone got snipers nerfed because, with the shotgun nerf a lot of people picked up snipers because they were the next viable option, it's human nature

12 RepliesIf you use Universal Remote, you're a scrub! ... Don't look at my Titan... Seriously though, finally got that thing, and it's incredibly effective in Crucible and also PoE. With a max Strength build, No Backup Plans, and perks set to strengthen Force Barrier, you become almost unstoppable in PoE. It gets MASSIVE crit damage and can one or two shot most anything, and in PvP, it kills people when they least expect it. They plink at you with an autorifle or scout or HC, think you must be closing in for a point-blank Party-Crasher and start backing up, and suddenly they are wondering where their scalp went... Brutally effective in Inferno Rumble. With no motion trackers, its much easier to keep a low profile and sneak up on enemies, and then plug them from much farther away than they expected! Use Weapons of Light for more fun! Plus...
Since it's Primary, you get free ammo on every life in PvP! Don't tell Bungie! Equip Vestian Dynasty for the fastest low-recoil sidearm with free ammo as well, and in PvP you can handle most any situation. Seriously, the free ammo thing is now kinda OP, especially since they nerfed most shotgun ammo supplies and special ammo drops, but you DO sacrifice a regular primary as a tradeoff... It could do with a larger reserve in PvE, like maybe 30 instead of 20, but at least make it react to shotgun ammo armor. Because of the free primary ammo, it has no reaf effect in PvP.
Well, first of all, destiny is my first multiplayer FPS game (maybe that's why my K/D sucks lol), I played COD on PS3 but at that time I only play the campaign and not the PVP. I remember my first destiny crucible match as a lvl 5 ( 0 kills and 3 assists lol) and I was struggling and my friend suggests that I should try using a shotgun, so I learned how to be a shotgunner and I can't snipe in PVP on Y1 because I prefer using a shotgun, but when HoW came out I tried to snipe in PVP and started to learn to snipe. Now, in Y2 I think I can snipe in PVP sometimes (I like it for 3v3), but I still like shotgun as well even though they got nerfed. So, in my opinion, I think both of them got their own learning process, but for me I think sniping is harder because I learned to use shotgun first back Y1.

2 RepliesI've been saying to people for a VERY long time now, that shotgunning is still a skillful way to play. Invis shotgunning? Hell no. Charging in/over/among the enemies and cleaning out 2/3/4 guys who had locked down a room is insane shotgun skill. Learning how to move, utilise your surroundings, utilise your equipment, prioritise targets and land clean shots at high pace is no mean feat and I've never understood the hate culture on shotguns. I wouldn't say either are better than the other. It doesn't take much to hardscope hallways all game like most average snipers. You have Bad -> Great on both sides of the spectrum, simply fulfilling different roles. (Disclaimer: I mainly snipe, to a high level, except for 6v6, before I get chewed for having no sniper skill or salty)

Sniper rifles are the noob tubes of destiny.

Being a shotgunner and a sniper is harder than being a fusion rifler and a sidearm user.
-
What about my Thesan FR4? I think I'm better with that than a shotgun or sniper.
-
14 RepliesA skilled fusion rifle user will melt a skilled shotgun rusher 7 out of 10 times A skilled fusion rifle user will melt an avg or bad shotgun rusher 10 out of 10 times I know this as fact from personal experience I get a raging clue from melting people charging me head on lol

Agree

I would say both require immense situational awareness and target choosing. When you are being pinched and you have a sniper, you have to choose the guy to snipe/quickscooe first. And you have to hit the headshot or you are -blam!-ed.
-
Sidearms is where it is at. I love them for 3 v 3
-
I find it easier to shotgun.
-
3 RepliesSnipers and shotguns are really easy to get kill streaks with. I respect a man who can get a 5 kill streak with a fusion rifle though.

But if there is a fusion rifle or sidearm...

And being a good sniper is harder than being a shotgunner. What's your point, m8?
-
1 ReplyYour title suggests to me that you think shotgunning takes more skill than sniping, and then I get to the end and I see that tier by tier it's harder to snipe in your opinion. I am now confused on your point. Stating the obvious that it's harder to be really good at one thing rather than average at another?? That's so obvious.
-
Movement is very important too surprised you didn't mention that
-
In the body of your post, many of your points seem unfair, as they address a cross-section, albeit the majority, of the sniping demographic. The type of sniper you describe is one that sits at the "end of the smaller hallway", presumably waiting for enemies to enter their scope. I can make the assumption that they play passively or, colloquially speaking, camp, from what you failed to put under the requirements for sniping. On the opposite end of the sniping spectrum is the more aggressive and, in my opinion, which I am sure is not an uncommon one, more skilled play style. These are the snipers that do, in fact, require
Situational Awareness, Quick Reactionary time, and the ability to prioritize targets
(Characteristics you had listed for shotgunners) in addition to the
Mobility, a steady hand, good hand-eye coordination, and superb aim
you mentioned. All in all (I'm tired of typing on my phone at this point), I think that very little separates a good sniper from a good shotgunner. Both need good situational and map awareness, gun skill, and the ability to make good decisions. A good shotgunner and a good sniper are equally dangerous. The deciding factor is the situation that they encounter each other in. TL;DR No idea what I wrote. I started writing it, stopped, came back four hours later and gave up.

5 Repliesbeing a good fusion rifle guy is way cooler than both choices lol
-
Sniping requires superb aim? That's giving a little too much credit.
